Mexican waiters need to listen and write down what I order. Told them 2 orders of the shrimp potato fries n my mom wanted a hot tea. Bitches forgot about that, geez. And they have the decency to bring me salad with dirt on them for my banh xeo Unbelievable. Never going here again even though the banh xeo was good.

Absolutely delicious banh xeo with the perfect amount of wrapping material. The outer shell is crispy and the flavor goes well with the herbs and fish sauce. The banh beo was also good but made me wish I had ordered the banh xeo instead. Their To-Go foods are very reasonably priced and their cashier was friendly and welcoming. Overall a pleasant experience and I would recommend going if you're looking for a good and affordable place to eat.

This place is good and cheap, but oily. For less than $5, you get a huge crispy crepe filled with crispy thin bits of pork, shrimp, and veggies, and a side of fish sauce for dipping. They also have 4 yummy meat cake filled spring rolls (not fried) also for less than $5. This is a great place to grab a good filling meal on a budget, especially when you crave a banh xeo. The cashier was nice, too. The bill came out to $20.09 to feed our party, but they didn't care about the change.

  • Laura L.

Walk in, sit at a sticky table, point to the banh xeo on the menu for $5, and share with your friend. Eat and be happy. Also get some spring rolls if you're craving it -- not the best, but they're cheap and hit the spot.

I've been coming here for years with my parents. It could get crowded at times and service could be slow, but the food makes up for it! I've tried the... Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Crepes): their signature dish! It comes with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts. Wrap it with the plate of veggies they give you and dip it in the fish sauce! You have to use your hands for this or else it just won't be the same. Banh Tom Co Ngu (Vietnamese Shrimp and Sweet Potato Fritters): they also give you a plate of veggies with this, but I personally just like to peel off the pieces and dip it into their fish sauce. Com Tam (Broken Rice): they have many different kinds, but I always find myself getting the broken rice with charbroiled pork, shredded pork, and baked egg. It's not the best I've had, but it is still pretty good. Pork isn't burnt. Shredded pork...well I don't know if any place could mess that up. Baked egg was soft and fluffy. Bun Cha Gio Thit Nuong (Vermicelli Noodles with Egg Rolls and Grilled Pork): comes with the veggies on the bottom? So make sure you mix it well! I like my egg rolls to be soaked up in the fish sauce so I like to just dump the whole fish sauce bowl on top of my noodles. But I think the broken rice has more flavor over the vermicelli noodles. Service: It could be pretty slow if there's a crowd. Food does take a bit longer to come out compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. The place is dirty feeling and you can see many tables that have dirty dishes on them for awhile before someone comes to clean it up.

Banh xeo it good , delicious, crispy but little oily. Sweet potato fries good too . simple home cook style restaurant but outside parking need more light too dark.

Come here for the banh xeo (pork, shrimp, bean sprouts)! It's crispy and delicious, what more can you ask for? I love how they give a huge plateful of veggies to offset the 'not so healthy' crepe haha. I'm used to eating in not so clean places (especially Vietnamese restaurants) and slow service so I didn't come here for that. And you shouldn't either! Be patient and tip well! I was surprised when a Hispanic waiter came and took our order. He spoke to my mom and me in fluent vietnamese! That is quite impressive and of course, my mom made fun of me for not speaking my own heritage language well... Thanks for putting me to shame Hispanic waiter dude! What a pleasant surprise nonetheless and more of a reason to tip!!! It's a great place to satisfy your craving for crispy banh xeo. Didn't try anything else but I was only thinking about banh xeo haha.

I've been here lots of times in the past but haven't written a review. This is my go-to place for banh xeo. They are great! Service is a bit slow and isn't the best.

I went here for their Bun Rieu, it the portion was gigantic and the broth was so flavorful. Great place for Bun Rieu.

Had a random craving for Banh xeo, it was bomb here, but honestly my mom does it just as good but with green onions in the crepe! And the bun Bo hue was pretty good as well. The thit heo quay was also great. Food is so refreshing on a hot day. Would definitely come back.

My husband brought me to Van's years ago. It was one of my first experiences with Vietnamese food. I loved it!!! I still love it!! My husband, Mother-in-law and I ate at Van's last night. It was around 5pm, not too busy yet. It can and does get super busy around dinner, and especially on weekends. The restaurant itself is in a strip mall. You might not know the restaurant is there, unless someone took you to eat. It's like a hidden, secret place!! The menu is yummy, and prices are fair. The Banh Xeo is fantastic!!!! I also love the Bun Tom Thit Nuong. They also have an amazing Chicken Curry. They sell out of that almost everyday. So, the place is not super fancy inside. It's a big room with a bunch of tables. Very simple, and that's OK, because the food makes up for the lack of amazing ambience. Seriously good food. Parking is not too bad. Just be patient trying to get in and out of the parking lot. Brookhurst has heavy traffic most of the day!! Check this place out!! You won't regret it!!!

This place is a total hole in the wall. But their 2 signature dishes are EXCELLENT. Every Vietnamese restaurant is known for a specialty. Broddard is known for their Nem Nuong, Binh Minh for their Bun Cha Ha Noi, Tay Ho for their Banh Cuon. Van's is popular for their Banh Xeo. Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe) is the signature dish here. Following close behind that dish is their Banh Tom (Fried sweet potato fritters with shrimp). This is what you come here for. If you're coming for Pho, go somewhere else.

There's nothing like coming here when you just have no idea what to order and ask for everything on the menu to satisfy your Viet craving. This is how I roll to Van's restaurant. Give me everything on that menu Van! The most impressive thing about Van's restaurant is the service. They have two Hispanic waiters that are fluent in Vietnamese, so don't talk any smack in Vietnamese around them cause they'll know what you're saying. Astonishing skill so tip em good! My favorite dishes here are the Bahn Xeo, Bahn Khot, shrimp and sweet potato fritters, Banh Beo... Only thing about Van's that needs a bit of improvement is hygiene, specially around the shared condiment trays, they're sticky and a bit dirty.

Quick place to grab a bite for cheap. Seating is sort of like cafeteria style, nothing spectacular. Ordered the viet crepe and a combo plate of the different small piece of food (don't know what they are called). The crepe was pretty crispy and would come here again for that. The veggies looked a little wilted. The combo had two of the clear thing with shrimp, one of the white thing with mung bean, two of the steam crepe thing with the mung bean on top, two deep friend thing with shrimp on top, some pork skin and a sour meat thing. The clear thing was a little thick. Everything else was eh, I can honestly say I rather go to Banh Mi Che Cali to get the tray stuff than from here.

This was my first experience having a banh xeo after seeing Tony Bourdain eat one in Vietnam on his show. It did not disappoint!! The crepe was golden, crispy, and sweet, filled with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts!! this thing is massive and takes up the whole plate!! we were instructed not to just pick it up and eat it as one might think. You break it apart into pieces, wrap it in a variety of leafed veggies they provide and dip it in fish sauce!! messy but extremely tasty!! I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone who loves Vietnamese food but hasn't sampled all the amazing stuff they have as not all restaurants specialize or serve this dish. I found this restaurant by the great Yelp reviews of this place that came before myself searching for this dish!! It's cash only so make sure to hit up the ATM before you get there. I did not notice if they have one on site!!

This is one of my "First to go" places for banh xeo in westminster. 1.The food is good 2.Portions are large 3.The prices are great. The banh xeo constantly have super crispy edges with very steamy insides. Not to mention a ton of veggies to go along with it. Personally, the fish sauce could be a bit saltier but that's just me. $3.25 for 4 rolls of goi cuon or nem nuong cuon. Can't compete with that. Everytime I go here I leave with a sticky banana roll, always fresh and piping hot. Note: Just don't come here looking for atmosphere, service, and cleanliness. Just focus on the banh xeo and fresh clean veggies. You'll be fine. But if you're not Viet, it would help to came with someone who.

Banh Xeo... vietnamese fried omelette. This is one of those food that the picture doesn't do it justice. I was in town for the Tet festival and one of my friend, Tony D., recommended that we try Banh Xeo since it's something we can't get in the SGV area. I'm so glad I followed his recommendation! This sh*t taste sooo much better than it looks in pictures. The shell was light and crispy, just fried to perfection. The bean sprouts and tender meat stuffing inside is simple, but yet provided the perfect balance. It comes with a giant plate of mixed vegetables: fresh lettuces, mint basil leafs, and a special "sour leaf". It was such a perfect and refreshing pairing to wrap the fried omelette with some crisp vegetables. Vietnamese food is one of my all time favorite, and this is up there on the list! I will definitely come back again for this dish!

My family and I came here along with her 2 friends for the crepes. It has been some time since we had the vietnamese style crepes. Overall it wasn't too bad but I remembered my mom's crepes were way better. Don't come here if you are expecting a clean restaurant. There were food scraps on the floor at the table we were sitting at. Some of the chop sticks had a sticky film on them. But we usually wipe them down before we used them.

Let's burst everyone's bubble first. This is not your Brodard or Quan Hy. It is not modern, does not have beautiful decorations or comfy seats. Heck, the bathroom looks like it's down an alley, in the back corner of the restaurant. Scared yet? haha Okay so if you are looking for a true hole in the wall, authentic as if you are back in Vietnam and don't care what it looks like, then this is what you will be dealing with. There are actually a bunch of Vietnamese restaurants around Garden Grove, Westminster area like this, and a lot of people aren't usually brave enough to venture in because you will definitely get a culture and even a stomach shock. I have to admit there are times when I am like huh this place is dirty and there is a bug in my lettuce. But if you don't care and just want some good food. Then come right on in, and don't be scared, even though sometimes people speaking a language you don't understand doesn't help and especially if they are evil eye-ing you right into your soul, then in that icase, bring along a Vietnamese friend along. =) hehe okay enough of that. So if you are still interested continue reading. The food here is good and cheap, and the main focus is their Banh Xeo. It is like a savory Vietnamese crepe. The batter is made of ground mung bean and flour, with other spices. Poured thinly in a pan and fried in a layer of oil. Throw on some shrimp, ground pork. Top off with a handful of bean sprouts, and fold the crepe in half. Plate. Done. It's very quick. So good. The taste is light, but once you wrap it in lettuce and dip into fish sauce, something happens and the flavor just intensifies. Delicious. I have been coming to this place since I was a kid, years later I am still coming here. The amount that you get for one Banh Xeo is good to share if you do not eat much, but for others out there who are hungry and love food it can be devoured easily. I also really like their Banh Chuoi. It is banana wrapped with sweet sticky rice, steamed in banana leaves. Yummy. Good dessert. Well for all you food-venturers out there, check this place out. Remember to inspect and shake out your lettuce well otherwise you might get some extra protein. hehe...did this review make you guys confused?? hehe

Thisssss wasn't the best banh xeo that I've had before. It was just ok; I felt that the flavor was lacking a little bit. And it was a little too wet and soggy at the bottom of the banh xeo. The interior wasn't anything fancy either. You know, its like your typical outdated looking viet restaurant. I guess the cheap price of the banh xeo really attracts people because this place was packed. So you get what you pay for?

4 stars for banh xeo, 3 stars for the rest. Their specialty is banh xeo. It is quite good - the crepe is thin and crispy, with pork, shrimp and veggies inside. You take a leaf of lettuce, add some of the herbs, put a piece of the banh xeo, roll it up and dip it in the fish sauce. It is on the oily side. The banh tom co phi is also popular - shrimp and sweet potato fritters. I thought this was okay. It was pretty oily, and not amazingly flavorful. To cut the grease, we ate it with lettuce and herbs, also. The banh khot (like a fat little fried pancake with a shrimp in the middle) was too oily for me. It was like a crunchy sponge filled with oil. It tasted fine, but I could eat only one. Finally, we tried the nem nuong cuon. They were very average for me - the pork wasn't flavorful or juicy enough for me. They sell a bunch of things light pork loaf and banana leaf wrapped goodies, for low prices. The onese we tried were all pretty good.

I'm giving this place a four because of the food, not considering the decor, service, or cleanliness of the joint. If your one of those people that are picky about a restaurants cleanliness than you might want to take caution when it comes to this place. Don't get me wrong a restaurant needs to be clean for obvious reasons, but I come here for the food. Only because I've been here so many times, the appearance doesn't scare me. Things to order (not in any particular order, just what mood your in): Banh Xeo (Savory Vietnamese crepe with pork, shrimp, and beansprouts) Banh Tom Co Ngu (Fried sweet potatoes with shrimp) Banh Beo Chen (steam rice flour topped with shrimp, fried onions, and green onions) Bun Rieu (Pork based soup with crab/egg meat, pork, pork blood, and cha lua) Banh Kot (basically a round ban xeo with shrimp and cooked till crisp) Bun Cha Ha Noi (ground and seasoned pork with vermicelli noodles) I've tried all those dishes, and they get high marks from my palette. My wife and I truly come here for the Banh Xeo, but the other dishes won't let you down either. The service is fast, and the waiters are friendly. Van's also makes a ton of steamed goods that you can drop in and purchase as well, think Banh Chuoi (steamed sticky rice in banana leaf with banana) and a plethora of other steamed Vietnamese snacks. If you can get over the restaurants appearance, you'll be rewarded some amazing authentic just like Mom makes Vietnamese cuisine.

banh xeo is crunchy and satisfying whenever I come. not to mentions, mexicans speaking fluent viet. respect. also, order the sweet potato fries with shrimp. great combo together with the banh xeo

Idk why soooo many people go to this restaurant! It's hella durtttyyy, the owner is rude, and the banh xeo isn't even that great! Tried if once and will never come back. And it's really ridiculous how some restaurants in the bolsa area charges for water. Sure it's only 50 cents, but it's not like they're giving me filtered water.... IT'S STRAIGHT FROM THE TAP. NASTYY

I don't understand the hype for this place at all. They are supposedly known for their bAnh xeo but honestly, it wasn't good at all! I should've known when I first walked into the restaurant, so many uncleared plates with a lot of food still left on it. I should've just left but no, I wanted to give the restaurant a try. Here's what I tried: banh xeo--- not good, the color was off, the meat was mediocre, banh beo-- how does a restaurant mess this bulletproof dish up? The batter was just disgusting, the shrimp tasted funky, like a few days old. I also tried their banh cot, just nasty tooo! This was such a disappointment and waste of money!

I thought I knew my Vietnamese food, boy did Van's educate me. A lot of items on menu I had never seen before. The food was good, Bahn Xeo was great.

This is one of my favorite places to go to whenever my family and I are in the mood for some banh xeo (Vietnamese style tacos/ crispy pancakes). The inside is pretty grungy (like a typical Asian place jkjk), dim, and kinda lively. The waiters tend to take your orders pretty quickly, so be sure to let them know if you need more time. The lettuce they give you to eat with your banh xeo tastes kind of weird and I don't even what to think about why it doesn't taste what normal lettuce should taste like. Just don't question anything and dip all of your food in the fish sauce and you should be alright (assuming you like fish sauce). The fried sweet potato fries with shrimp or the shrimp in the fried cups taste really good and are perfect for sharing with others. I also like how the shrimp is peeled unlike places such as Tay Ho in which you have to pick out your shrimp in the banh xeo and peel it as you eat (really inconvenient). --- Recommendation: Go here if you are craving fried, crispy food that is really filling. This place is also really authentic in temrs of being Vietnamese (if that matters to you). ---

I love me some banh xeo. The restaurant has been here for quite awhile. I feel dirty when I walk in there it reminds me of the hole in the wall restaurants. They have hispanic workers who speak english better than my guy. The banh xeo is huge and has a lot of shrimp and meat packed in there.

First off, people who left reviews s.a. " I had better homemade Banh Xeo" and the service is slow, blah blah are numbskulls, period! Hello people, it's unfair to compare any restaurant food with homemade, hence the word "homemade", and what do you expect service to be when the restaurant is always pack? They even have Mexican helpers speaking Viet for ya...also, what do you expect when you're only paying 5 bucks for a single banh xeo and large dish of veggies that can feed at least 2 people? Banh xeo here is hands down one of the best in OC. If you like no favor and overcharged bx, you can always go Brodards across the streets.

  • Dom C.

Their bahn xeo is ok and reasonably priced, but integrity is everything. Be careful with what the older woman that takes your payment (owner?, GM?) charges for desserts, etc. Also the place is really dirty.

Exploring Vietnamese cuisine, many write ups that I read recommended Van's to be reknowned for their banh xeo. This dish consists of a very large crispy crepe stuffed with pork, shrimp and bean sprouts accompanied by a large bowl of fresh crispy vegetables including lettuce, cilantro, and basil. When I asked the waitress how best to devour this dish, she responded very curtly and really didn't explain how to do so. So, left to my own devices, I observed my fellow patrons at the restaurant with the same dish who took a large piece of lettuce and stuffed it with a piece of the filled crepe and other vegetables and dipped it in a vinegary fish sauce. It was pretty good! I wish however that the waitress would have been a little more helpful with a non-versed customer. Oh well. If the waitress would have been helpful, I would have given Van's four stars.

you can't go wrong with banh xeo. never really been to a place that made it bad. also got the fried shrimp and sweet potato appetizer (i'm gonna call this an appetizer, even though they give you a lot) went with me and the boy. got 2 banh xeo and 1 appetizer. it was WAYYY too much food. barely ate the appetizer. what a waste soooo, remember to share the appetizer if you're going with 3+ people. or if you eat a lot you can share between 2 people when i went there was only 1 waitress with like 15 tables. she looked young. i felt bad for her. she needs some help because she had to take everyone's orders, get customers extra whatever they wanted, and had to seat people. -1 stop being cheap asians! hire another waitress

  • Carolyn D.

Bun cha ha noi (sp??) and the fried shrimp/ potato thingy is the ONLY thing you should order here! Pretty delicious!! Everything else there sucks. Why did I deduct 2 stars?? 1 for being so filthy and the other 1 cuz nothing else is good to eat there but what I listed.

I have never eaten banh xeo outside of my house so when my friend suggested that we go here for dinner and get some banh xeo I was pretty excited to see what banh xeo outside of my momma's cooking tasted like. She kept raving about this place to me and told me its her go to place for banh xeo. My friends and I came here for an early dinner. The place isn't the cleanest and not most welcome looking, but eh I don't mind going to hole in the wall Viet places as long as the food is yummy. So my friends and I got banh xeo and the fried sweet potato and shrimp. Everything was fresh and good. The banh xeo was nice and crispy. They gave us a bunch of fresh lettuce and greens. So that's a plus as well. I am definitely a fan. It was super cheap as well and I will for sure come here again when I am in the mood for some Vietnamese crepes.

Here's what I like about your restaurant: 1. Your banh xeo. Very crispy & not too much coconut like other restaurants make for their Banh Xeo. Definitely your "signature dish". & it's not too burnt either. Very good in cook. Especially the veggies that comes together with the Banh Xeo; very big, large in amount & very fresh; I think your veggies looks organic. 2. Com Tam dishes. The grilled meats are well-marinated & not too dry. Very tender & moist. Your Com Tam dishes are enough to compete against Com Tam Thuan Kieu restaurants. 3. Your service. Quick & fast. Some of your service members are Latino; I have to admire them. They're pretty talented, especially the language; I've seen that when they worked in the Vietnamese restaurant for a long time, they started to learn how to speak Vietnamese & I have to compliment that your Latino serviceman speaks quite good Vietnamese & improving along the way. Kudos to your serviceman for both the talents & the quickness on the service. 4. Very clever to have a small food shop together with the restaurant (to sell gio, small banh chung, and small banh tet). Not to mention the food you sell for the "small shop" are freshly made & nice & hot. Well done. Minor adjustments to improve your restaurant quality: 1. Your soups, especially the pho. Please focus on the broth more carefully. Try to be careful in NOT making the broth taste like Hu Tieu for pho. Overall, I have to say good job with everything. Therefore, I shall grant you a 4 stars out of 5. Keep it up with the good work & best of luck with your business. I'll definitely come back in the future for sure.

Some of the best banh xeo I have eaten! It features shrimp, pork, and other refreshing vegetables and is HUGE. Best part? It's only $4.95! Service here isn't too great which is typical for Asian places, but I can't think of many places where you can get a good meal for 5 bucks. They also have a variety of rice bowls and other Viet food! Restaurant is a little dingy but who cares when the food is so fresh?

Wow this place has excellent Vietnamese sizzling crepes. They close at 8:30pm daily, we showed up at 8:23pm and they still had tons of customers. Banh khot was a bit heavy as expected but if you break them up and roll with the veggies, it's very yummy. I thought the peanut sauce was a bit too sweet and the fish sauce could be a tad bit saltier. The rolls were ok, I think they were rushing to close. I'd definitely come back for the crepes and try other dishes.

Well our trip starts with my friend asking if I wanted to change out of the clothes I had on(dress down). As we enter the restaurant their is a piece of carpet taped to the floor as a welcome mat.We sit at a table and notice everyone around us cleaning everything on the table.Hhhhmmm ????At this point I channel my inner Zimmerman I order the shaking beef(yes, yes I did order something lol)It arrives and a notice a puddle of blood on the plate it was from my raw beef, and then I gave up.I gave it a shot folks pts for that at least.I say enter at your own risk.

The banh xeo is so damn good it compelled me to dust off my review acumen just to let the world know that..well..just THAT. The banh xeo is damn good. Crispy with good chew, beansprouts & onions, and well-balanced proteins including shrimp made this freshly fried crepe worth future travel for me. It's very 'dipable' as well and comes with a full plate of greens. $4.99/ea The fried shrimp and sweet potatoes weren't as good, but I take full blame for that. I never should have ordered it. Double down on the banh xeo instead. That and a glass of coconut juice. CASH ONLY

This rating is strictly for the restaurant itself. Okay so yes, they are FAMOUS for their banh xeo but when you have a side of lettuce, with a baby SNAIL in it, your appetite just goes down the drain. I do not think I will return here for awhile. Maybe buying banh xeo and taking it home right away to eat can be an option but finding that snail in my veggies did it for me. blah! First a lady bug at my last visit and now a snail. later van's restaurant! this review has a photo included of the baby snail!

CHEAP EATS! Best thing: Price Worst thing: Service One of my friends suggested that I go here for Banh Xeo, Vietnamese crepe. I came on Monday for lunch with a friend and upon walking in...we weren't sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait for someone to seat us. The service was lacking right from the start, but that's typical of any Vietnamese restaurants so I was not so surprised. I went up to the pay counter to ask the lady if we could just plop down anywhere or if we had to wait. She called over one of the waitresses and we finally got some attention after an awkward 5-7 minutes. The restaurant was not too busy during the time we were there, and it's the kind of place where you can tell people are ONLY there for the food, because the atmosphere was kind of awkward. No music, no tv, and nothing to really look at besides each other. We ordered: - Banh Xeo, which are Vietnamese Crepes seemed to be the specialty dish here. I wasn't all too impressed, because I've had better ones homemade. The banh xeo had shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, and white onions inside. It was also very crispy which is a huge must! One of my favorite things about this place is they give you so much fresh vegetables to eat with this dish (lettuce, mint, all the other random leaves). -Goi Cuon (Spring rolls) were half off! Their spring rolls were pretty awesome and the dipping sauce was unlike other I had ever tasted. -Banh Tom Ngu (Shrimp and Sweet Potato) I only got like 3 shrimp on this plate, but this plate just was simply a plate of battered sweet potato fries. Very crunchy and tasty, and definitely a dish to share among 3-5 people. I still could not get over how cheap the prices were here, so if you're looking for a cheap Vietnamese restaurant, I would definitely recommend this place.

This may have been the first place I bookmarked after moving to Orange County because I looooove banh xeo... but for some reason I never got around to visiting. I got sidetracked by broken rice or something. Yesterday I finally visited, and the banh xeo was all I've ever dreamed about and more! Appropriately huge - easily the length of my forearm. Crispy on the outside, creamy lining on the inside. Plushly lined with fatty slices of pork. Stuffed with snappy fresh shrimp. Bean sprouts galore. A veggie plate piled high with lettuce, coriander leaves, purple basil, and fish mint leaves. (The fish mint took me aback, by the way - it was the first time I'd ever had it and had to look it up later at home. I thought it must have been a citrus leaf of some sort because of its sour taste.) Anyway, banh xeo: verdict: YES. Go there immediately and order one. It's $4.95. You can't possibly go wrong. I even finished the whole thing - no small feat when a pancake is the size of a good-sized purse. Not the best chanh muoi here - barely pickled at all. It's refreshing, though, and all crushed so you don't miss any of the delicious lemon arils. They got extra boyfriend brownie points for having vegetarian versions of 5 different dishes. Julian got something I forgot the name of: six little cakes stuffed with mushroom and tofu, served with a sweet fish sauce ("fish"? Who knows? Didn't ask. Didn't care). It was even good... not just "good for being vegetarian" but actually good.

We got banh xeo, spring rolls, banh khot and some other stuff. The service was incredibly slow. The servers were a bit absent minded and didn't get the things we asked for. It was cheap but it didn't taste that good. I would rather go to brodards.

One of my favorite Vietnamese dishes is Banh Xeo and this place is known for theirs. Hands down my go to restaurant for Banh Xeo. I haven't tried any other dishes, but why would I need to when the dish comes out perfectly crisp and delicious every time?! If you haven't tried this place you must if you're in the area.

This place was good to me until there was a baby snail on my lettuce place. It was well alive and crawling ... Told the waiter and she said sorry like it was a normal thing -__- they brought back another lettuce place and when I look closely at the veggies , there were little bugs on it. Now I'm wondering if all the other time I've eaten here, I've eaten those bugs before or if I just noticed them now... Either way i am highly disgusted. This just shows that they do not promote cleanliness in their foods. Will not be coming back. My appetite is destroyed.

I'd been craving bánh xèo for weeks now, so when an old friend who happens to be Vietnamese-American wanted to catch up, I saw a golden opportunity. We met up with a third buddy and checked out Van's, which I came to realize, was on my Yelp bookmarks from another friend's recommendation. This place must be 'money'. Walked in. It was huge and poorly decorated, and only Vietnamese people were there. Awesome. That's always a good sign. If the place is tiny, full of caucasians, or well decorated, you can count on mediocre food, in my experience. Grabbed three old laminated menus (another good sign) and saw that the food was really inexpensive. Now I know we made a good decision. The bánh xèo was one of the better ones I've had, without question. My friend got the ban cahn tom thit nuong and it looked really good too. My Vietnamese-American friend got something with pig ears and pork blood in it, I had to stare out the window a few times. Hey, I like authentic, but I still grew up in Pennsylvania, I can't take that kind of thing very well. The cha gio were, to my surprise, disappointing. They weren't particularly flavorful, they seemed a bit hollow, not thoroughly stuffed full, and the texture was a bit mushy. Everything else rocked though, so it's still a four-star hole-in-the-wall.

Banh Xeo - Came here because a friend recommended the banh xeo. NOT that great I tell you, I've had better. I would go somewhere else or just make it yourself at home (it's just an egg omelette). The quality of the meat was poor, had a lot of fat cuts, Veggies were fresh tho. Nem Nuong - Surprised it was quite good, the sauce was excellent, even better when you add the hot sauce. Service - Horrible....came around 3pm when it was dead slow and they didn't even notice us. I had to stand up and grab the menus myself. The probability of coming back here is zero....so many other alternatives.

Never had banh xeo this GREAT! The interior is ghetto and dirty. The staff isn't so friendly but I don't care. The food is JUST that great that it makes up for it.

Their banh xeo is very delicious and super crispy on the edges, not to mention it is HUGE!!!! They give you tons of veggies to go along with it. I do hate their "fish mint" though. It's the herb that taste literally like fish! I also recently tried their banh bot loc. it's a chewy tapioca rice cake with shrimp inside. I love banh bot loc and always try to find places that makes it good. This is the best place i have tasted banh bot loc so far. The tapioca skin is chewy yet silky and soft. Other places put too much tapioca and a tiny piece of dried shrimp making you feel like your just eating a slippery chewy rice cake but Van's got the texture/consistency PERFECT! Dip everything in the fish sauceee and chili MMMM!!! Very cheap for the portions which is a plus. The place is a bit run down and dirty but it taste good so.... The staff are pretty attentive too. They greet and seat you right away, especially the lady workers or the boss lady.

I'm so addicted to this place. I always eat banh xeo here! I have had other items such as, bun thit nuong, tom and cha do and many, many others (too many to list) and they were all delicious. Also, I'd never leave without picking up something from the to-go table (got to be there to understand it!) or order goi cuon or nem nuong cuon to-go. I think it would be okay if Van Restaurant were the only restaurant in town just because I found everything to eat here. Be patient and be kind at this place and you'll have a great meal. Sorry, I took off a star for cleanliness.

I will start with the good, and then end with the BAAAAD! Food was good, portions were not small, prices were great! Old lady who served us...are you seriously kidding me...tapping your damn fingers on our table as we told you already we are NOT ready, give us a few minutes. I am Chinese, I am use to rude service in Asian joints all my life, so I understand to never expect kind, nice service at an Asian restaurant...but damn lady tapping her fingers AND Grunting some unknown language to us??? She definitely perpetuates and keeps on strong the stereotype of rude services at Vietnamese/Asian joints..way to go grumpy, old lady at Van's.

The best part of this hole in the wall place are the banh xeos, or the Vietnamese crepes. They're as big as your head! Perfect consistency with crispy edges and an even filling in the middle.

I really love this place. It is really old school. The owner would just stand in front of the cash register and orders directions to the employees. Kinda funny to see but things are done correctly and food come out in a timely manner. It is great b/c it is like comfort food so you can't go wrong with it. The price is totally reasonable too. The reason why it didn't get a 5stars b/c the place is pretty dirty.

If you like fried food you will need to go here. If you like fried Vietnamese food then there is no other choice. Nha Hang Van makes their banh xeo (vietnamese crepes) crispier than anyone else I know. Even my mother was impressed. Unfortunately, the day we went the pork inside wasn't fresh and had a strange taste to it. Regardless, we finished the entire plate and was amazed by how many vegetables they gave us. Usually restaurants don't give you enough.

i love their bahn xeo to the extent that i came here two days in a row.. the bahn xeo only cost $4.95 and it came in such a huge piece ( yelp.com/biz_photos/vans… ). i love their bahn xeo, and i have yet to find a bahn xeo better than this.. its so crispy and they are quite generous with the amount of meat they put. but since im not a meat eater, i gave most of my meat to my bro.. i like the shrimp though, but i notice that they only gave 4 pieces of shrimp in each bahn xeo.. not that i mind!! i also tried their vegetarian bahn xeo for the same price..they put mushroom and tofu as the fillings instead of shrimp and pork for the vegetarian one.. it was good but i didnt like the sauce at all. it taste weird and smelly, i prefer the regular fish sauce!! also tried their broken rice with pork and some egg stuffs for about $5 ( yelp.com/biz_photos/vans… ). yes its cheap but they didnt really make a good job in making rice dishes.. my brother said the pork tasted really bland and the whole meal wasnt as satisfying.. then just before we paid our bill, we decided to also get their taro che for only $1 ( yelp.com/biz_photos/vans… ) - cheap and tasty!! but u have to eat it fresh coz i dont think it will still be edible if u wait til tomorrow.. their bahn xeo is definitely 5 stars but the reason why i deduct one star is for the rice dish, cleanliness and the service.. if u r picky about how clean a restaurant is, then u might want to go somewhere else.. other than that, this place is perfect if u want to have a quick and cheap lunch/dinner!! CASH ONLY!!

FOOD -Banh Xeo ~$5.00 (5/5): Look around you, if you're not there to get their banh xeo go somewhere else! This is what they're famous for and seriously, no one does banh xeo like Nha Hang Van! It's so deliciously crunchy and the giant plate of fresh greens make it even better. -Nem Nuong Cuon (3/5): Not as good as Brodard but not bad either. Plus, it's half the price of Brodard's -Banh Flan $1.00 (4/5): I'm no flan concierge but this is my favorite place to get flan and it's a DOLLAR! Portion is perfect for one person -Ca Ri Ga aka Chicken Curry $2.00 (5/5): Oh my goodness, the best curry I've ever had! The soup is so rich and delicious while the chicken is tender and soaked with flavor. Plus, you can't beat that price! -Mang cau yogurt aka Soursop yogurt (4/5): I haven't seen this every single time I've gone but if you do see it, it's worth a try! The aroma is very strong- just the way I like it! PROS -Delicious food with extremely CHEAP prices -Plenty of seating -$1.00-5.00 area where you can buy some stuff to go i.e flan, curry, cha lua, etc... CONS -Cash only -Not very clean -Closed on Wednesdays Overall, DEFINITELY worth trying if you're not a clean freak!

My mom usually drags me and my sister here for banh khot. It's one of the best places to have I must say...and all for fairly cheap. My mom tends to also order the bun rieu too but it's not as good as her's but doable. For the price you can't complain. Another reason why she loves this place is all the banana leave wrapped goodies they sell on the side as well. Service is spotty but in general you can't ask for much for dirt cheap goodness.

Located on 15th street and Westminster, the actual sign on the place outside is "Nha Hang Van's Restaurant" which "nha hang" already means "restaurant" so I find it a bit redundant.. hah. But anyways, it's banh xeo galore here! (To those who aren't Vietnamese, "banh xeo" is like a thick, fat, crunchy crepe or crunchy omelette with thick skin and has a vegetable, shrimp, and beansprout filling) It is THE best. The skin is absolutely crunchy-crunch and they give you lots of beansprouts and meat.. All the locals including me (especially) go here for some special banh xeo loving. It is really cheap for a whopping banh xeo! Around $4.95. They also have nem nuong cuon here, but you can't compare it to Brodard's nem nuong cuons right across the street. But I guess they are okay for what you pay (50% and around $3 for four rolls) I just don't like how sometimes this place can be a bit dirty and I don't understand why the menus and sauce bottles have to be so sticky! Sometimes, you'll see up to 9 tables where people have clearly finished eating, but there is no one clearing up those tables in sight... Bring cash and be prepared for a cheap meal! Also, take out lots of napkins from the dispenser, drench them in hot tea and wipe your surroundings because it is an EXTREMELY sticky place with sticky floors, sticky sauce bottles, and sticky tables....

I used to come here a lot when I was a kid for the Banh Xeo. This past weekend, my mom was craving it so I took her here. Place hasn't changed much and the prices are still decent! $4.95 for a crispy Banh Xeo with shrimp and pork. (Why is the veggie Banh Xeo the same price??) I like the mustard greens that they include with the veg plate, and gives it a nice sour kick to the meal. They also have decent and cheap Ngoi Cuon (shrimp spring roll) $3ish for 4. Bad thing is, an hour later, you're hungry :)

The banh xeo here was so good!!! It was pretty cheap and it came out in a huge portion. A family of 3 shared one order while me and my friend ordered one for each of us. I came here with my friend so she just ordered everything for me. I also got the salted plum drink which was really yummy too. The banh xeo is a little messy to eat but it comes with a lot of fresh lettuce and herbs which balance out the greasiness of it.

My Uncle always takes me here for Banh Xeo, and I love it everytime! The green onion and egg omelet is very big and crispy and the vegetables they bring you are fresh. As for the other items on the menu, they are okay. Nothing to boast about. The service is not that great either; however, I don't expect it to be.

Review is only for the to-go items they have near the counter. Almost everything is $1. Basically everything was wrapped in banana leaves. They also have the meatloaf for $3 a roll. There are also curry for to-go. Seems like quite a people buy this stuff. The overall restaurant isn't very clean. Many tables weren't cleared after the customers left. I guess they are really short-staffed.

Let me reiterate what everyone else is raving about this place. THE BEST Banh Xeo and Banh Khot (Vietnamese Crepes and Mini Pancakes) you'll ever find! My mom always said that a good Vietnamese Crepe depends on the pan you use (she's gone through a bajillion and has successfully found "the one"). I think this applies to Van's as well. I mean, they've been open for so long now, I'm sure that pan has cooked thousands of wonderful, crispy little crepes to fill our stomachs. When I say crispy, I mean crispy! I never tell my mom because I'm afraid it might hurt her feelings but MAN, I love Van's Banh Xeo and ONLY theirs! It comes out so incredibly crispy and is filled with crunchy fresh bean sprouts, with LOTS and LOTS of fresh veggies on the side. Also, when I hear about delicious Banh Khot elsewhere, I'm always skeptical because I'm almost positive they can't beat Van's. Both of these can be dipped in their delicious Nuoc Mam (Fish Sauce), which is another very important factor. Although they have amazing food, the place itself is kinda dirty =/ Don't use their bathrooms! It's definitely a hole in the wall type place. It's entertaining to see the Mexican workers there taking your orders in Vietnamese, though! I'm amazed!

Just get the Banh Xeo... If you come here for anything else get your life together, slap yourself in the face, and order the BANH XEO. The best Banh Xeo at a restaurant I EVER had. Taste and the Portion size is pretty amazing. This gets a 3 star because everything else I've had was either mediocre or it was barely adequate... BUT you can't go wrong for what they're known for, so you won't be disappointed! Did I mention... ORDER THE BANH XEO?

If you can get past the super-sticky tabletops, trash on the floor and all the uncleaned tables, the food at Van's ain't bad and its inexpensive. Go for an order of their house specialty fried rice flour crepes, banh xeo. Its crispy and stuffed with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, mung beans and onions. They give you fish sauce for dipping and a big plate of vegetables along side. I can eat most of the veggies they give you except for one leafy herb that taste really fishy. You should also try their fried shrimp and sweet potato fritters. Most menu items are around $5 to $6. And if you're a fan of the spring rolls at Brodard across the street, Van's sells a comparable version for 50% off their regular price. An order of 4 rolls comes out to a little over $3. For that priced, you'd only get 2 at Brodard.

Still the best banh xeo I've ever had. Just don't come here looking for atmosphere, service, and cleanliness. Just focus on the banh xeo and fresh clean veggies. You'll be fine. But if you ain't viet or came with someone who is good luck to ya.

I've come here about a few times already on a recommendation fro my aunt that this is the best banh xeo (Vietnamese pancake) place in OC. To add to that fact, it is the ONLY thing you should be ordering here. I've had a couple other things at this restaurant, and it really isn't that great. Their goi cuon is alright, and their banh thom co ngu is subpar to Hanoi Restaurant's. So if you order anything here, it's their banh xeo and ONLY their banh xeo. Everything is cheap here, so even if you ordered anything else, it would be well worth the price. It's $4.95 each, and it's humongous. You can't beat this price for lunch or dinner! If you're hungry, this should satiate your hunger, and if you're not, it's a good dish to share for those who don't eat very much. It's easier to be here when you speak the language as their English isn't all that great and it's hard to know what to do or where to go when you're done eating since they don't bring you the check here and you have to tell them what you ate in order for them to figure out which check is yours. Mostly Vietnamese people dine here, and sometimes it looks closed when it's actually still open. Their service isn't all that great, but then again, is there such thing as a good Vietnamese restaurant with great service anyhow?

Our waitress spoke no English, that's usually how i judge legitness haha. Anyway i Had a bahn xeo here and have to say it has become one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. Our waitress was nice especially for a viet place, considering none of my party spoke viet... Try the bahn xeo here its very filling and for about $5 its totally worth it

Something about Vans: - The place is big so I don't think there's ever a line but I'm sure it could get crowded on the weekend - Specialty: BANH XEO ($4.75). It's ALMOST big as your head but not really. It has bean sprouts (lots of it), meat, and shrimps inside. The outside layer is very crunchy. - Bun Thit Nuong: I wouldn't recommend shrimps with this. Get egg rolls. I don't like the vermicelli they use for this dish either. It should be thinner, not the kind they use for pho. - The restaurant itself is kinda icky...you can smell fish sauce all over the table. - They also sell extra stuffs on the side, mostly banana wrapped related.

Last week, I phoned in to order two portions of banh xeo. I live in Irvine so It probably took around 30 minutes to drive there. When I arrived and paid, I found out that the cashier lady who probably took my phone order did not do anything until I arrived and paid. The result was I had to stand around for additional another 30 minutes before I got my take out. Their banh xeo was greasy and cold! The place was dirty.

3.25 for 4 rolls of goi cuon or nem nuong cuon. can't compete with that. banh gio here is superb. cha gio com, banh tet chuoi, banh gai here are also very good. You have to try them (if you know what they are)

food is well above average here, selection is great because they serve dishes more restaurants do not carry, and the prices are unbelievably low (with large quantities). my new number1 place to eat frequently. not the nicest decor, but the best value for very good food.

There's only one place we go to when we're craving Banh Xeo---Van's Restaurant! For those who have not tried it before, Banh Xeo is a Vietnamese dish that is often described as a crispy, savory crepe. The thin batter is typically made of rice flour, coconut milk, various seasonings, and tumeric. The filling consists of small pieces of pork, shrimp, scallions, and bean sprouts. Accompanied by a range of greens, Banh Xeo can be wrapped in a piece of lettuce and dipped into a Nuoc Cham sauce . What makes or breaks a good Banh Xeo is contingent on two factors. The first, how crispy the thin batter is. It's hard to often get this as it requires a ton of oil and usually a great heat conducting pan--such as cast iron. The second, is the ratio of the fillings. Often times places add too much bean sprout and not enough protein. Van's Restaurant tops both of these factors--BIG TIME! Their Banh Xeo are ginormous and extremely cheap--$4.95 each :) I also like ordering the Banh Khot from Van's. Quite similar in flavor profile to Banh Xeo, Banh Khot are almost like mini versions that you can pop into your mouth :) I love them because they are reminiscent of all of the street foods in Viet Nam. Van's also offers a variety of TO-GO pre-prepared items that you can pick up. Vietnamese goodies such as various Banh Chung (sticky rice cakes filled with savory meats), Xoi (sticky rice--both savory and sweet), Che (desserts), etc. All items, very wallet friendly. Next time you've got the hankering from Banh Xeo, give Van's Restaurant a try. :)

My grandfather use to take me here to get BANH XEO when I was little. I remember the crunch of the crepes and the yummy flavors of the shrimp, beansprouts, and pork on the inside. I haven't been back in ages, but I always pass by when I'm in Little Saigon. A bunch of us wanted a light lunch and decided banh xeo would be the food of choice today. I am soooo happy to report that the banh xeo is just the way I remembered it!! Don't get anything else but the BANH XEO. They are $4.95 each and they are HUGE! Each one fills up one large plate, so I can get really full from just one. They also supply you with tons of different lettuces, herbs, and greens to wrap your banh xeo in. The fish sauce is quite good as well, so make your wrap and dig in! Note: this is finger food. Don't be shy. Cut your banh xeo into smaller portions and stuff them in the lettuce. Your hands will smell like fish sauce after!

I like coming here for the banh xeo! My boyfriend doesn't like the pho here. It's really oily... The only reason I come here is for the banh xeo! Please try it out, if you are going to come here! The prices aren't bad either! :)

4.5... My first time trying Banh Xeo, and OMG, orgasm in my mouth... I was a little weary of coming here as I didn't know what to expect. Parking was a bit difficult to find during lunch hour, but luckily, the restaurant was not packed. Andy H. promised an authentic experience, and yes he delivered. I'm glad he is able to speak and understand the language, because I was totally lost. I'm sure the lady was laughing behind my back since I had no clue what they were talking about. We ordered: Chao Ga ($4.95), Banh Xeo ($4.95) and Ca Phe Sue Da ($1.50). The Chao Ga is the Filipino version of Arroz Caldo. This had really good flavor to it. Unfortunately, we were too full to finish it. Viet Coffee was pre-made, so I wasn't able to see the drip :( The Banh Xeo was the highlight. I was a bit confused as to how to eat it. Given that it is greasy, oily and messy, I was taken aback on the actual process of no utensils. You pretty much rip a piece of Banh Xeo using your hands, wrap it with the lettuce leaf and dip it into the sauce. WOW, I felt like I was in Pangasinan (Philippine province where my Dad is from). Nevertheless, what an experience and super cheap!!! It was delicious, and I'm determined to find something similar in SD.

We came there for dinner and ordered 2 banh xeo and banh khot. A waiter brought out 2 plates of vegetables. They looked messy and then banh xeo came out next. The first bite without vegetable was good. I started to roll banh xeo in a vegetable leaf and found a live caterpillar which was crawling. By the way, this is the second incident, we gave them another chance and hope they improved :). Never come back again, be careful people out there when you come to enjoy your dinner. I stopped eating and left the restaurant right away. So disgusting...

My favorite place in town for VN styled crepes/banh xeo. The entire outer shell is crisp, flaky, golden, and delicious by itself. The inside has the right amount of meat, shrimp, bean sprouts, onions, and beans. They also give you an abundance of fresh greens and Asian mints. If you can overlook how greasy the dish is, this is as good as it gets. At around $6 each, you're definitely getting your money's worth. The place is old, unsanitary, and probably violates a couple health violations here and there. But you know what they say about food coming from run down places--they're grrrrreat! (Okay, maybe Tony's line is in reference to a certain cereal, but you know what I mean).

Accidentally had to go there for a launch with bf. Though this place is popular for it Vietnamese but alas unexpected experience for me I have got form here. I went here after reading the Yelp special on Garden Grove Vietnamese food . I've never tried Banh xeo before so I was super excited. Meat and veggies in a Vietnamese crepe, what can go wrong? Well for starters, the crepe was filled with about 90% bean sprouts and 10% meat. Also, it was really greasy. We got the Banh Xeo and Banh Khot and felt like we needed a detox soon after. Because the place was kind of ghetto, I thought the food would be more authentic and delicious, but I was wrong =(. Two upsides are that it's cheap and the service is fast. Not super terrible, but I wouldn't eat here again.

Banh Xeo? More like crack! This place has hands down the BEST Banh Xeo I ever had, I am talking Drake status. Better than Vietnam, better than Texas, better than Atlanta. Yes, its that good. Thick and crispy? How?! I don't know. I tried a few things here like Bun Thit and everything was decent, but the Banh Xeo is easily a 5-star chick.

  • Lu T.

I'm probably the only person that's never had the banh xeo here. Perhaps I'll give that a try some other time. I drove by one day and saw a sign for 50% off goi cuon (spring rolls) and nem nuong cuon (grilled pork spring rolls). I'm a total sucker for these deals in Bolsa and they seem to be popping up everywhere. I do love goi cuons. I'd probably eat anything that's wrapped up in rice paper. Anything. I'll have to admit Van's doesn't have the best goi cuons, but it's undeniably cheap and it gets the job done. I phone my order in about 10 minutes before I come and they have my lunch ready and waiting just as I arrive. 8 spring rolls for $6.53, what a deal. Again, not the best. Sometimes the meat is a bit on the fatty side so feel free to pick that out before you eat so all that lard doesn't go straight to your thighs. Some days it's good, some days not so good. Regardless, I still get some anyway, it's like playing russian roulette with my colon. I like the danger factor.

Whenever I'm in the Bolsa area I look for asian food, mainly Vietnamese food. Van restaurant is very holy in the wall but they serve great Vietnamese food. There's only 3 items i get here which are the com tam, banh xeo, and the fried shrimp/sweet potato. Depends on what I feel like. The com tam is very generous in portions, its about 6.50 and it will stuff you. I normally don't like banh xeo but the way they make it here is delicious. They pancake is pan fried and stuffed with bean sprouts and fatty meats. It comes with a huge tray of veggies and for 5$ bucks, its a good deal. Order the sweet potato fries if you're looking for a side. Comes in a generous portion with whole fried shrimp which is all edible. The customer service is attentive. When i go with my family its usually one word exchanges cause the language barriers but as long as we get they bring then I consider it good service. The last time I went here I was short a few cents. I ordered banh xeo to go and the lady didn't make me pay the few cents I was short, she was very kind! The food is great here but here's a little advice. Make sure that the utensils you are using are CLEAN. I grabbed a fork once and there was a baby cricket smushed on it. So yeah make sure you check your utensils before you eat. They also sell some goodies in front of the cashier. Desserts, meats etc..

Van's has the best Banh Xeo and Banh Khot in Little Saigon ever. The ingredients that are used to make the outter pancake crepe type layer isn't as greasy as how it is at most places. Instead, it's crispy and doughy and at the same time there are generous portions of shrimp, grounded meat, and bean sprouts. The fish sauce that comes with it is also amazing, it doesn't leave that fishy aftertaste in your mouth either. If only I knew the secret recipe to their fish sauce I wouldn't come here so often, but since I don't, that is why I keep coming back for more. Note: The broken rice and vermicilli dishes aren't as great here, so I recommend only getting the Banh Xeo since that's what they're known for.

I went to this restaurant years ago, but because my mom said it was too dirty for her to eat there, I never came back until my friend was craving for banh xeo. To me, my mom will always make the best banh xeo but I kept an open mind to try out this place even though it's dirty and probably not as good as my mom's. We ordered the nem nuong spring roll because it was half off, banh xeo, and banh khot. the spring rolls were good. not as good as brodards but for 3 bucks for 4, I would order again. the banh xeo, just as i suspected, it was not as flavorful as my mom's, but it is pretty crispy and that's something I wish my mom could do about her banh xeo. I dont think the banh xeo is any different from any other restaurant if you were to order it from any other vietnamese restaurant. the banh khot was really crispy and yummy.i like to dip that in the sauce for the banh xeo and that was pretty good.

I love their banh xeo . It really inexpensive. I think it is around $5.97 a piece but for two people order of 3 is good. My mom also buy their banh and che that they sell on the side table for years. They have great deals. The lady at the front counter is super nice. I think she is the owner. She was help you pick out the item in the front and answer all your questions if you don't know which is which. Overall, it is a must try place. But let me warn you guys, it is a hole in the wall place so don't bring your date here. It just for casual dining.

Besides their bank xeo here, purchased some of their goodies on the sides for snacking. It's always freshly made.

Their signature dish is the banh xeo, hands down. It's pretty good and they give you a pile of fresh veggies to wrap the yellow shelled goodness around. The fish sauce is not that bad too, a little on the sweet side but it's not bad. Warning, this place has a greasy/dirty feel to it. I wouldn't come here wearing your Sunday's best but at least you'll escape this place with your belly full at a minimal cost!

The sixth Vietnamese emperor had a quirky idea in choosing his successor. A foodie at heart, he commanded that whoever offered him the rarest and most delicious dish would succeed him as the next ruler. While all the sons searched near and far for something unique and luxurious, the youngest son, being the poorest, had only the basic ingredients to work with - rice, pork, and beans. And with those simple ingredients, he created banh chung, a square shaped steam cake with layers of pork and ground beans in between two layers of glutinous rice. Of all the various exotic dishes presented to him, the emperor chose the youngest son's as not only it was the most delectable it was also meaningful being the symbol of earth. Banh chung has since antiquity been the ubiquitous dish for every Vietnamese household during Tet, or Vietnamese New Year. Laborious and time-consuming to make, most families nowadays opt for ordering them before hand. Van's Restaurant has been our family's favorite banh chung place for years. Having tasted banh chung from other reputable bakeries, we always come back here for their consistency in making quality cakes. At first glance, the skin has an evenly leafy green glutinous surface due to the banana leaf wrapping. The rice layers are medium firm and not wet yet not undercooked. The sandwiched layers of beans and pork in a mutual effort lend their essence to one another to create a unique filling for the cake. Banh chung can be enjoyed by itself, with soy sauce, or with its traditional condiment dua mon (pickled vegetable in fish sauce). While the big banh chung can only be ordered during Tet time, throughout the year, they also offer the miniature size banh chung that pretty much has the same ingredients. Besides that, you can also pick up various banana leaf specialties such as banh chuoi (banana cake), banh gio (minced pork and rice dumpling), cha hue (Hue pork paste), etc. All are good at very economical prices. Quick Tip: Vietnamese New Year is coming up so make sure to get your order of banh chung in right away. My dad already ordered 10. A big banh chung cost $15 which can feed four people easily. They also sell dua mon there (banh chung condiment) as a convenience.

The best banh xeo I've ever tried at a restaurant. The crispy crepe has a coconut flavor to it. The banh beo is decent but not the best. The place has decent service and it's cheap. Can't beat that!

This restaurant is famous for banh xeo which my wife always craves for but I always prefer to have pho ga instead. Price is good and service is fast(Mexican waiters who understand Vietnamese!). Whenever I go there, I always buy a lot of other snacks wrapped in banana leaves. They are so good and mostly $1 each. They are always steamy hot. Excellent.

Each Vietnamese restaurant has it's own specialty. Best thing to order? Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe) It's about $4.95 and great to share or eat on your own. Other things to order: Banh Beo. Banh Khot (coconut breading with shrimp?) Vietnamese courses are oftentimes difficult to translate in English but take my word. This is a place you need to visit if you are in Orange County.

My patronage for BANH XEO goes here (when I prefer a less messy kitchen). I love, love their generous lettuce and herbs by the plate-full complimenting this dish, and if you're not satisfied by the portion then request for more at no extra charge. The veggies are very fresh just like been carefully handled from the owner's backyard. I do agree, I suggest trying their NEM NUONG CUON (4 rolls) at 50% off. It packs more meat than Brodard's rolls, although looks can be deceiving compact roll vs elongated roll, respectively. I'm sorry to say Brodard use to be good but now they've gone cheap with their stuffing/ingredients while inflating prices; I'm glad I haven't step foot back there ever since. Good riddance Brodard. I also recommend their $1 flan for dessert, it's better than Che Cali's but not as awesome as Mr Baguette's caramel flan. Any fan of flan must give theirs a try. I've also tried their very own $1 VN-ese yogurt, that I find less silky and less creamy than Che Cali's but that's 'cause it wasn't aggressively cultured until a week later in my fridge when it taste perfect tart n' sweet. And, when MANG CAU YOGURT is avail do give it a chance; it's fragrant and delicious. The service (knocked off a star rating) is at times inattentive being bustling busy so do bring your patience along with an empty stomach yet their hospitality is always grand. === CLOSED EVERY WEDNESDAY ===

I got the vietnamese pancakes here. my bf's mom took us here JUST for the vietnamese pancakes (banh xeo). She said they never order anything else on their menu. I saw a few people eating other things but yeah, most ppl were eating the banh xeo. I've only had it once before, and it was not as crispy and ginormous as these. I don't know what they put in the eggy crust to make it so crispy but dayam it was good. I also loved the late of greens it comes with. I think I had about a week's worth of greens for lunch with my banh xeo. After lunch, we bought a few banana leaf wrapped rice balls. They're so good and I take it to school with me.

Fellow Yelper Jessica H's review is spot on !! There Banh Xeo is crispy golden brown with all the savory ingredients inside, probably the top 3 I've tasted in Orange County. Another must try is there Goi Cuon, soft with all the goodies inside especially the flavor of the pork belly. There service is good and the cashier is pleasant. I would give it 5 stars but it tends to get a bit dirty inside the restaurant and yes, the restroom needs LOTS of attention.

Remember that episode of Anthony Boudain in Season 5 when he went back to Vietnam and had Banh Xeo? If you dont remember shame on you...go look it up and watch it because you'll never think of Banh Xeo the same. This episode made me want to purchase a plane ticket and fly back to Vietnam for Banh Xeo 46A. However...that didnt happen so I went to Van's Restaurant instead...skip the 15 hours flight. Two things you need to know about Van before coming here: 1. Please dont expect service, you are here to eat not be pampered 2. Forget about cleaniness...that's a thing of the past here I came here to satisfy my cravings for Banh Xeo and I came out a little disappointed. I grew up with home-made Banh Xeo all my life...I still believe my sister makes the best Banh Xeo ever and no restaurant can compare. Van is the next best thing when it comes to Banh Xeo but in my mind nothing beats the best other than home-made. I am not sure what happened but it seems as though they fried the Banh Xeo in 5 lbs of oil...it was so greesy I was constantly using napkins to wipe off the oil. Other than the greesy part I thought the Banh Xeo was still good. The other dish I ordered with the fried shrimp with sweet potatoe fries....delicious! Crunchy on the outside and filled with sweet goodness on the inside. What I love most about Banh Xeo is all the vegatables that comes with it...my idea of a great dish is anything wrapped in lettuce with vietnamese mints and dipped in fish sauce. My niece ordered the Banh Beo and it tasted like wall-paper paste...I am not sure what wall-paper paste tastes like but if i had to compare it to something I could imagine it tasting just like it. This review is for the Banh Xeo...not the service (because there was none) and not for the cleaniness or the rude server that was cleaning the floor around us as we were seating. At one point he asked me to move because he had to lock up the iron gated window...talk about rude! I think I would prefer to take the Banh Xeo to go and enjoy it in my own home. If you are craving Banh Xeo I would recommend Van's, just don't have high expectations about anything else...you are here for Banh Xeo and that is it!

If I am craving banh xeo and next to my friend's grandma's banh xeo, this is as good as it gets! I always want to adopt all my friend's grandma's for the delicious food they make and the way they smile at you as you scarf down their food. Anyway, if you can't get grandma's banh xeo, then make a trip to Van's. So yeah come here for the banh xeo. My friends also advise me their bun rieu is good and their banh beo is decent. I will say I've been coming here for years and I've never not once looked at the floor. Until last weekend. And I realized what people on here mean by the lack of cleanliness. Dude, it would take 1 of their many workers like 10 minutes to just pick up the napkins, lettuce, wipe up the floor...why do they just leave it like that? I love the food but I have to dock off 1 star just for that. I have to keep it real.. I know when you're Asian and all, some things you just close your eyes to, because you're there for the food, but I dunno, call me a neat-freak or what you want, but it made me want to help clean up after I ate. Just saying. I'd still eat their banh xeo though.

This place serves one of the better banh xeo (Vietnamese crepes). They definitely give you more shrimp and port than other crepes. Everyone orders Banh Xeo here. The restaurant could be a little cleaner, especially when it's crowded on the weekend; and of course like most Vietnamese restaurants, don't expect excellent customer service. I also love the bakeries they sell in the front, the one wrapped in banana leaves. I always get the Banh Gio (not sure what the American name for it is, but it has pork and bamboo shreds inside) and the Banh Chua (banana cooked in sweet rice wrapped in banana leaves).

Is your taste for and experience with Vietnamese food limited to when your co-workers go get Lee's Sandwiches for lunch, or restaurants with silly puns on the word Pho? (Pho Shizzle!) Then Van's Restaurant (nha hang VAN according to the sign out front) may not be for you. However, if you are an adventurous type, or if you like authentic Vietnamese food, then this place is worth a look. What they are famous for is their Banh Xeo, which is like a large, flavorful crepe stuffed with bean sprouts, chicken, beef, and shrimp. It is quite good, and pretty much a must have if you are going to come here. The other thing I order are the broken rice dishes, because they are pretty safe. You know where you are with a pork chop and shrimp cake. If you order soup, you are pretty much asking for it. And by "it," I mean chunks of curdled pig's blood. My sister has been banned from ordering stuff here because she always makes such a hash of it, so my dad chose Bun Bo Hue for the two of them last time we went. I believe Bun Bo Hue is described as "Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup" in the menu, which is only a partial description. What it really is is Beef-Tripe-Oxtail-Curdled Pig's Blood Noodle Soup. However, it still tasted good and they ate a good portion of it. The major cons of this place I think are the service and the cleanliness. The tables and floors are sticky, and you'll be lucky to get your glass of water before you get your entree. But the Banh Xeo is worth the price of admission, which is really low BTW. I think one of those things sets you back $4.99, and the prices for everything are very reasonable here. The Thai Iced tea and Vietnamese Coffee are great too.

Came here with the fam bam for dinner and as usual, you don't go to a Vietnamese restaurant for the excellent service, it's anything BUT that. As always the Banh Xeo (stuffed Vietnamese quesadilla) was good but the shell was not as crunchy as it could have been. I think they were rushed because we ordered so many! My 2 stars would pertain mainly to the service. If you don't mind rude, slow servers that hardly pay attention to you.......BUT you're craving a Vietnamese specialty, this is probably the best place to go. Eh...

So this restaurant is the one you should go to if you're craving Banh Xeo, but be warned that the restaurant is extremely dirty! =) The restaurant is huge and is usually pretty busy on the weekends, but you'll get seated immediately, just disregard the surrounding tables with piles of dirty plates that still need to be bused. They have other things on the menu besides banh xeo, but I've only ever ordered the banh xeo here and have never seen anyone order anything else. For around $5 each that's a steal! You'll be full and satisfied that you spent a measly $5 for a great meal.

You know the restaurant is going to be good when the server doesn't speak English, and all the diners are Vietnamese. Thank goodness I went with someone who knew the menu inside and out. It's some dang good stuff, the bahn xeo is my new best friend. Filled with bean sprouts, meat, and shrimp, and then drenched in fish sauce...truly life is good. The bahn beo was a first for me, interesting little bowls of rice cake and shrimp...again drenched in fish sauce. I always went to Brodard's for the spring rolls, I won't hate, they are freakin good, but seriously the crowds there suck. Oh wow, Van's has spring rolls that are just as good, and the sauce that's laced with crack too! Oh wow, look! It's 50% off! So that means I get 4 spring rolls for $3.25 at Van's, instead of the $6 at Brodards! Ok, ok, the restaurant isn't the cleeeeeeeeanest, but looking past that, the price and the food is definitely worth it. Try ordering 7 different dishes, 3 different fancy shmancy drinks for $50 elsewhere. According to my Vietnamese friend, this place is legit, she's totally right!

Hole in the wall, but the best banh xeo you will ever have. And they're big and cheap! Only $5. Not a place to take a date or to impress, but if you have a banh xeo craving, this is the place to go. Make sure you use all the veggies and the fish sauce. :)

My friend took me to this restaurant as we were REALLY hungry.. I heard the banh xeo? is their specialty. Their food is great and they have special on spring rolls as half off right now com tam is good also, service is good food is good, great vietnamese restaurant i think. I was very satisfied for some reason lol, i felt full and happy that the foods were generally in a cheap price range :] banh xeo is like $5 or less ALOT of amount but be aware its a bit greasy.

OMG. Best banh xeo, ever. They have a vegan one, it has tofu, bean sprouts, mushrooms in it. The Banh Xeo is light and crispy on the outside, just how it should be. A little bit on the oily side but that can be fixed with some napkins. Asian restaurants aren't too good with directions, so sometimes you gotta take matters into your own hands. They have those really thin, cheap napkins though so it's ok if you use quite a few. They give you a special soy sauce instead of fish sauce. It's sweet and when you put some Sriracha in it, it gets even better. The best thing about this restaurant, the mexican servers that speak Vietnamese. They speak better than I do. I love them, they're awesome. It's sort of messy to eat when you wrap it up in lettuce and dip it in the sauce. But it's so worth it. The restaurant is really big so I don't think you'll ever have a problem with seating.

I didn't plan to visit Van's. My friends and I had actually planned to eat at Brodard, but it was closed, and someone suggested Van's as an alternative. Since it was nearby, we all agreed to go. Before we ordered, someone warned the rest of us, "Be sure to get the CRÊPES or something that someone else has ordered before. Their other stuff isn't that great." Foreshadowing, YAY!! I ordered the SHAKING BEEF, which another second-time visitor recommended. Actually, everyone got either crêpes or shaking beef. When our food came out, it smelled great. I tried some of somebody's crêpe, and it was fantastic! I also got my beef and started tucking in. Since we'd all gotten our food except for one guy, he just told us to get started because he was sure his food would come out soon. His food didn't come out soon, and we had to flag down two waiters, one of whom actually came back to refill our water glasses without a word, before we finally got someone to bring his food out. That was a minus point for service. And that's right about when I saw it. A hair. In my rice. I called over the waiter, who was very apologetic and said he'd bring out a new one. Hairs happen; I usually don't sweat it when I find a hair in my food; I just send it back and give the restaurant a chance to make it up to me. They brought me out a new dish, piping hot. The waiter then told me that the cook said that it wasn't really a hair; it was part of the beef. Now, call me crazy, but I've never seen beef with silver hairs in it or on it. So, unless they're butchering their own cows in the back, I'm not buying that. Also, the hair was in my RICE, so riddle me that, Batman. But the poor guy was trying to be nice, and it wasn't really his fault, so I smiled, and tried to give it another go. I got about for or five bites in before I saw another hair. This time, it was in the beef. At that point, I was done. Now, it could very well be that it was just a tainted batch of rice or a bad day, but I don't plan to go back. The crêpes were excellent, and so was the beef until I found the hair, but my experience sucked. So you can chance it if you like, but I'm steering clear.

If my mother opened up a Banh Xeo restaurant it would totally kick Van's Restaurant's a$$. If i were to return i would definitely try something else next time. Van's banh xeo was not that great in my opinion but it was super crunchy.

A friend took me here to celebrate cause she knew that I love banh xeo. Hands down, this is the place to be if you're craving that dish! When it came out, I was amazed at the size of that pancake/crepe that was in front of me. It was so delicious, it was made perfectly where it had a crunch with every bite and didn't get soggy from the filling in the inside (consisted of bean sprouts, minced pork and shrimp). We also ordered a plate of banh khot, which looks like mini muffin bottoms made from the same pancake mixture with a shrimp in the middle. The whole meal plus drinks came out to be $12, that's dirt cheap!

OC Foodie trip stop #3: 4.5 STARS. Now I've been here plenty of times. So my excitement was for Maria to try this place out. You could clearly see, she definitely felt out of her element. So definitely refer to her review. For me, I got to test out my wonderful Viet-grish (Vietnamese mixed with English). Nervous, I was. I always seem to mess up the words. Oh well. Practice makes perfect. Right? Parking was horrendous but the restaurant wasn't as filled as I thought it was gonna be. Good for us. I promised Maria an authentic experience. Making sure she ate the Banh Xeo exactly the way you are supposed to eat it. Needless to say, she was completely turned off by using your hands. But after come coaching I got her to enjoy the goodness that is a Banh Xeo. Yes it was extremely oily and a bit overdone on the edges. I still enjoyed it. It had a nice balance of everything. I asked for no bean sprouts in it since I detest bean sprouts. My one complaint would've been that they didn't fold it in a nice half but that's just too darn picky. To hear that it was an orgasm for her mouth made me a happy dude. It's hard turning people onto Viet food other than pho. Next up... Chao Ga with Chao Quay. which is congee (rice porridge with french batons). It had tons of flavor to it and lots of chicken. Unfortunately, we were so full from it. But the warmth that it left in our stomachs was a good change from the oilyness of the Banh Xeos. The Chao Quay was a bit disappointing because I wanted the crispiness that it usually is. This looked like it was borderline stale. :( The service was good but I was a bit turned off by the sticky soup spoons. We couldn't find one decent clean one. But everything was super cheap compared to most places in San Diego! We were super happy to know that we spent very little here. Will I bring her back here? Hell yeah I will!

After a long surf session in Newport, our Viet friend Dave recommended that we go to this location to have the banh xeo. It was only about five bucks. It came with a lot of lettuce and other leafy greens that we wrapped it in. It was good. If you can eat a lot, then you may want to order an appetizer on the side. Also, their Vietnamese ice coffee is very strong. Other places focus more on the sweetness, but Van's also makes sure that it's potent as well. Most of the seating are long, eight person tables. Good food and decent service.

This place is well known for Vietnamese crepe. It's crispy and big. Basically, it's a yellow batter that frying in 10" to 12" inch pan, and mostly green bean, onion, pork, alot of bean sprout, and a few shrimp. You eat by rolling with lettuce or in a bowl like me. I put everything in it and pour fish sauce with it. Yummy.

I love eating banh xeo, but so far I haven't find a place that makes good banh xeo yet. I've tried it here once just to see why this place is so popular about their banh xeo. Turns out it was cheap, big, crunchy, but wasn't that good in my opinion. At home my family don't use or put COCONUT MILK and mung bean in the banh xeo. However, at Van's they do. Its kind of odd trying to eat something that is salty with the smell of COCONUT MILK. They just don't mix well together. (kind of like sugar & salt). I don't know why this place and Tay Ho restaurant likes to add in coconut milk, but the smell of coconut milk makes it hard to eat. The credit I can give them for is how cheap it was all these years. For $5 you get a big banh xeo enough for 2 people to eat with. They give you lots of fresh veggies and the dipping sauce is good. Service here is friendly. The waiters are nice and funny. Van's also sells other small food items too like curry, vegetable soup, yogurt, cha~, desserts, etcc for decent prices. I've eaten them before and had really like them. For now I'm just not a fan of their main dish "BANH XEO". But don't mind eating their other food.

This review is for the Beef Pho only. Note that Pho is not their specialty at this place, as I found out the hard way (I don't know if they had Pho Ga but Beef Pho was the only Pho in the menu that I recall). In short, it was a could-have-been-a-player kind of Pho (Almost likable enough to return for it but not quite kind of Pho). The soup looked kind of oily but not overly so from the appearance. But it had this oily aftertaste which I didn't really enjoy (Been away from oily Pho for a while..., brought back memories). Taste wise, it tasted kind of sweet with fair amount of depth to the flavor but drowned out by the oiliness IMHO. The noodles and beef-things from the Beef Pho were average but with no memorable standouts. Plain. Almost everything I touch seemed sticky but the seats and utensils were sticky free and clean. Floor was littered with cilantro and other vegetable bits and kind of reminded me of Johnny Rebs' restaurant where peanut shells are scattered all over the floor on purpose. I don't think Van's intended to have vegetable bits scattered all over the floor however, unless they're thinking of starting something new in the area, don't clean the floor until the last customer leaves (Could be cool in a down to earth kind of way, but also I often don't think straight so...). The service was quick and curt, no issues with the service.

Banh Xeo= $4.95.... Crispy fried egg and coconut milk omelet, inside bean sprouts, pork and shrimp that has not been deveined. The inside doesn't have any sauce, and is lightly stirfried or steamed. The flavoring comes from the fish sauce and the greens- mint, and lettuce that takes away the grease from the meal. The hot tea comes in plastic tall glasses, and the dining room has the feel of a cafeteria, but easily accommodates large parties. They also sell desserts and goodies on the side for a $1. Looking around, they also have bun cha ha noi, and spring rolls... Though not perfect, I left happy and full.

Not the cleanest or most well-maintained restaurant, but the banh xeo is good. They also have banh gio and other things for sale, which are convenient if you get hungry again later.

I"ve been Craving for Banh Xeo quite sometime now . My mom makes the bombest of the bomb Banh Xeo however doesnt make it often :( So I ask around where is a good place for Banh Xeo. Ended up here at Van's Restaurant. Parking: Plenty Service: Decent Setting: Very plain and dirty. The floors were sticky and tables were also wiped possibly by a old stinky rag. Beware of the chili bottle and whatever is on the table because they are also all sticky. Flies flying around the restaurant. Food: Banh Xeo: ($4.95) It was crispy, however not flavorful. A good amount of pork/shrimp and lots and lots of bean sprout. It was quite greasy only the bottom part. Banh Khot: ($4.95+) Comes in 7 Deep Fried smaller verison of the Banh Xeo. It only has a shrimp in it, it reminds me of a Onion Ring but with a bottom. Nem Nuong Spring Rolls($3) Comes in 4 I actually like this Nem Noung better than the ones @ Brodards. It contains Grilled Pork Sausage, Miniature Egg Roll, Green Onion, Cucumber, and Lettuce. I don't believe there was any Mint Leaves but I dont like Mint so Yay! Also comes with a sweet tangy dipping sauce. Veggies: No Dirt/Bugs Very Clean and Fresh The meal cost under $20 for two people and we were stuffed. Van's Nem Noung Spring rolls over Brodards Nem Noung Spring Rolls

Bánh xèo (bahn SAY-oh) is a popular snack in Vietnam. It's a savory crepe with a filling of bean sprouts, sliced pork and shrimp. The batter is cooked to a perfect crisp, and you eat the delicious dish with fresh lettuce and herbs and you dip it into fish sauce. It's super tasty. Van's Restaurant specializes in banh xeo, and they charge a whopping $4.75 for a huge portion. It's a great social food, and would be super tasty with an ice cold beer. We tried to order other things off the menu- but that was a mistake. Stick with the banh xeo and you will be fine. Also, if you don't know any other Vietnamese food other than pho, i HIGHLY suggest that you broaden your horizons and try this tasty dish!!!!

This place is alright. It kinda looks unsanitary though. Our table was sticky. The food was your typical Vietnamese food. Nothing to rage about.

four stars for having a mexican server speak perfect vietnamese! Only in Little Saigon I tell ya. As for the food, the flour in the dough was a little thick for my taste. The free fresh greens on the side made up for it.

My friend brought me here a couple years ago, and ever since I've been Hooked on the Bahn Xeo. Big , yummy and cheap ! Best Bahn Xeo yet ! To be honest though, I don't like to eat inside the restaurant (it could use some TLC) , so I recommend ordering to go. I didn't know about the Sweet Potato Fries, sounds yummy, I'll have to try next time there ! Enjoy!!!

This place gets a 3.5 from me. After reading all the reviews for Banh Xeo, I had to give it a try. I have to admit that this is the best Banh Xeo that I have ever had at a restaurant but it is really greasy. It is very crunchy and well priced. For $5, you can't beat it. It is also pretty big in size. Every table had a Banh Xeo. I also had to try their 1/2 off goi cuon (spring rolls). They were pretty good but the peanut sauce was more watery than anything. It should be thicker where we can actually dip it. I went with my brother and he said that the sauce water is not catching on to his spring roll. Their banh khot is something that I will never order again. It was very oily and I have had better at many other locations. I recommend passing on this. Overall, the price was excellent. We ate to the fullest and for 2 people with tax and tips, it was only $17. I will be back but just for the banh xeo. BEWARE: If you order water or tea, it is $.25/person. This is the first time that I have ever seen this at any restaurant. Me and my brother ended up with getting soy milk for $1. We were hoping to get it canned but saw them pour it out of a large container.

The good: Their banh xeo is probably the best I've had outside of my mother-in-law's when she was alive and the price is very reasonable. Their banh cuon is also pretty good as is the other dishes we tried here. And again, the prices are very reasonable. The bad: We had a party of 8 - 4 adults and 4 children. We placed the drink order and then maybe 8-10 minutes later we placed our food order. That was after having to wave the waiter down again. When the food started arriving some 15-20 minutes later our drinks had still not come and I had to walk to the cash register to complain. No apology was given, just was told "okay". 6 of our orders came within the next 5 mins, but it took flagging someone down again to get our soda chanh (sparkling lemonade), cafe sua dau (iced coffee), and nouc dui (coconut milk/water), and another trip to the cash register/owner to find out what happened to the final 2 food orders. Again, no apologies for messing up. The nouc mam was watery and sweet, which is disappointing as banh xeo is so much better with good nouc mam (the Vietnamese fish sauce). The ugly: After the meal I went to the restroom, and at least the men's restroom did not have soap and looked like the large soap dispenser was bone dry having long since run out. I only hope that the employees have a wash station in the back and are also gloved. All in all, regardless of the prices and how crisp and tasty the banh xeo was, I don't think I'll be taking my family back here.

If you love eating Banh Xeo and you can't get your mom to cook you any... then this is the best place to go. Their Banh Xeo is huge compared to surrounding restaurants, and i can pretty much say their Nouc Mam (fish sauce) is delicious. Its a little greasy, so you may want to just lightly dab it with your napkin. I usually order my Banh Xeo without the green beans (dau xanh)... Other stuff I recommend there: 1.Banh U (sp)... its the triangle leafy thing that sell next to the register... Simple and great for breakfast. 2. Banh Cot...Fried rice cake with a shrimp on top 3. Banh Tom... Sweet potato fries with shrimp.... I LOVE THIS!

After seeing Bourdain's episode on Vietnam and the clip of him eating banh xeo, I knew I needed to head to Van's. The restaurant itself is big inside and there are a lot of tables so I imagine you won't have to wait ever. I don't pay attention to the decor because all I care about is eating in a somewhat clean environment. Van's passed the test. I did not see one table that did not have this specialty dish and at $4.75 it is a huge steal especially in this economy. It's served with a plate of lettuce and two or three other kinds of herbs obviously meant for wrapping. The banh xeo was cooked perfectly crispy on the outside and is definitely meant to be eaten with your hands. The sweet potato fries and shrimp ($4.75) was also very delicious, but very filling because it's fried deliciousness. The shaking beef ($6.25) was very tender and flavorful and is served with broken rice and some tomatoes on the side. If you visit Van's, you must try the BANH XEO. It's Vietnamese soul food at it's best; in my opinion at least.

This place is not known for its cleanliness...but the food is cheap and delicious. Their Bánh Xèo is super crispy and tasty. And that's their specialty. I also like Bánh Khot, which is a smaller, kiddie version of Bánh Xèo (no veggie or meat, just shrimp). Their Bún Riêu Óc is really good too. Although recently it has become alittle bland... Bánh Tôm Chiên is also very popular. They are not shy on the complimentary side lettuce. You can wrap the crispy piece in the lettuce and dip it in the fish sauce--which also is very well marinated. The check for a group of 3 can easily be from $17 to $25. I love it.

My childhood has been at this restaurant, and for good reason. If you want to try some authentic Vietnamese food, and I mean the stuff that you don't normal get like pho then come here. The banh xeo is so worth it and the price is fair. I would come here all the time to eat wit the fambam. Always worth going to, only reason why it's not 5 stars is the traffic around the area and parking. Not really the restaurants fault, but takes away from the experience.

Bahn xeo, crab and snail soup, what else could I want?. Maybe a couple more people to share it all... Three of us worked on that pancake! Mmmm. And what great prices! No wonder they were busy! Atmosphere: you are here to eat, not for romance! Love it!

  • Hue M.

Banh xeo is their specialty here. The exterior is super crispy and delicious and the insides are stuffed with meat, shrimp, beans, and lots and lots of bean sprouts. The size is huge and it comes with generous portions of vegetables and herbs. The price is ridiculous for only $4.75 you will be left happy and satisfied. I also recommend having this with their cafe sua da because it's made less dark and bitter than most vietnamese coffees. In addition to the food on the menu, they also sell snacks/desserts/che on the side table by the cashier that you can buy for $1 each! They're all delicious and made fresh in the kitchen.

You really can't judge this place as you walk in cause it'll turn you off right away, as with most vietnamese restaurants I presume, but with that aside Van's does not mess around when they serve they're banh xeos! What I crave on hot days are things wrapped in fresh lettuce leaves and mint dipped in some sweet and spicy nouc mam! As oily as everything is I suppose the fattyness cancels out with the trays of fresh produce they give you to accompany the banh xeo(that's how it works in my mind atleast). Banh Xeo is top notch here. They perfected this delicious vietnamese savory crepe and seem to be in there own little groove. The outer shell remarkably stays crisp and flavor full while being overstuffed with beansprouts, shrimp, and pork...or beef. Banh Khot is basically a banh xeo but in banh beo form...say that three times fast. I always order this to accompany my meal because I love to over indulge myself with delicious food. The tray of fresh leafy greens they give here is always crisp and clean, I end up always asking for more trays of rau cause boy do I love my greens! Except that one plant that tastes like fish...that thing just creeps me out. The nem nuoung and the goi cuon are 50% off. I've only ordered the nem and so far it's been pretty standard, nothing special but nothing bad either. The dipping sauce could really use some help though yet I always order it cause I am a slut for anything 50% off. Battered and fried sweet potatoe fries with shrimp. Mmm carbs! Is there really anything more we could ask for? Just order it. Banh beo here is pretty sub-par. Too thick, chewy but entertaining and worth a try none the less. They also do a good rendition of Bun Bo Hue that my friends and I get a couple times here to enjoy with our other 10 dishes that we have ordered already on the table. Once again, I love excess. Gluttony is a deadly sin right? I only order the same like 5 things every time I am here but those dishes are a postive solid and you won't leave unsatisfied or bitter, I assure you. I love this place and I'll probably keep coming back till I die, which is probably soon if I keep eating like this...I'm just happy that OC doesn't make restaurants post a letter grade on the window cause ignorance is truly bliss in a situation such as this. OH and the hispanic servers speak pretty much fluent vietnamese which is always a treat to see.

Definitely come here for the Banh Xeo or the Banh Khot. The Banh Beo Chen and Bun Ha Noi are good too if you're not in the mood for Banh Xeo or Banh Khot. It's your typical Vietnamese restaurant. The decor is a bit old, the place isn't the cleanest, and the service is pretty bad, but I've come to expect that. Food here is pretty cheap. I normally get two orders or one and a half (get one and split another with a friend). I don't think anyone here speaks English so be prepared to break out the Vietnamese.

I love Van's Restaurant. People are really nice, and they served chape but high quality Banh Xeo. I know many restaurants do not have either Banh Xeo or Banh beo (they always have Pho. haha), but they have!!!!

These are the kinds of restaurants in Little Saigon that when you go with your friends, you say: "O yea, I guess my parents really had some good taste!" and everything about your childhood comes full circle. I recently revived my Van's Restaurant memories after a 6 year hiatus and went with my cousins. My childhood memories of the fried shrimp and sweet potato fries dipped in fish sauce lured me back there and I'm glad not much has changed since then (including the prices!) Yes, the banh xeo is now the reason I go here, very substantial amount, pork and shrimp, and a nice plate of veggies to go along with it. I have yet to will myself to try the other items on the menu, but this is usually the first place that pops to mind when going out to Sunday brunch.

Recently ate here with my bf and his mom, and sorry, this place is No Bueno... One of the biggest turn offs about a restaurant is it's lack of cleanliness... and its one thing to not mop your floors... but it's another to not even wash the lettuce and greens that you serve your customers... There were chunks of dirt in our greens, it was disguisting... The only thing this place is good for is the right side of the restaurant where they have banana leaf wrapped rice goodies and Cha (steamed ground pork). I would never dine here again, their Banh xeo and Banh Khot isn't worth getting ill over. You can definitely find it better elsewhere. Just stick to the togo area, in and out.

This has to be my favorite place for banh xeo(vietnamese crepes) place in bolsa. It extremely cheap and affordable but alittle ghetto if your don't mind. The banh xeo is fill with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts and you eat it with lettuce and fish sauce. They have a wide range of other vietnamese speciality that you don't get to eat alot. My vietnamese is pretty bad so I am not even going to attempt to spell it,. Writing all about these vietnames restaurant is started to make me craving for them LOL

    - Nem Nuong ($3): 4 spring rolls with pork grilled sausage and some kind of fried batter that adds a crunch to each bite. Also served with a dark pasty sauce to dip the rolls in. Great value for its price. - Banh Xeo ($4.95): This is what my gf brought me

Go here for the Banh Xeo! It comes out very very crispy and large. My only complaint is that they tend to over crisp it to the point where you can't really taste the original creamy soft flavor that Banh Xeo is known for. Sort of like when you get extra toasted fries at In-N-Out burger and you can no longer taste the soft potatoes inside. Overall, besides the restaurant being a little outdated, and not as clean; a great experience to be had if you are fond of Banh Xeo. Personally I prefer to order it at Brodard, which is across the street as they don't over crisp theirs.

While reading "Stealing Buddha's Dinner" by Bich Minh Nguyen, I began getting mad crazy cravings for Vietnamese food. Living on the West side, I am extremely limited provided that there are a handful of pho shops around with names that try to pull in an "ethnically-interested" crowd such as "Pho-show" and "Absolutely Pho-bulous." Basically: not what I was looking for. 45 minutes later, 40 miles south of my apt, and a little research via yelp I pull into the parking lot of Van's Restaurant. The smell of fish sauce in the air, a cash only sign, a small table of steamed/fried goods to take home, and the sight of tales and chairs that have seen better days - I know I'm in the right place. On the table for review: * Banh Xeo - the number one seller! * Banh Beo * Banh Khot Banh Xeo was perfectly golden, not overly oily, but lacking flavor! It was stuffed generously with...mostly bean sprouts! Few shrimps here and there with a few slices of pork, but it was lacking a certain kick that I much needed. However, it came with a great heaping plate of fresh greens and herbs. Banh Beo was alright, I've had much better. I didn't care for the fact that they looked run over. It seemed over cooked, much too doughy, and flat - literally sticking to the plate. Not enough shrimp powder, overpowering mung bean, and I missed the pork fat! I know its bad for you, but if I'm going to eat what I eat, I want it to be great! Banh Khot - You can taste a hint of coconut milk, but these little cakes are so thick and heavy than what I'm typically used to. However, these were the highlight of my meal over the Banh Beo. Not the best I've ever had, but good enough to fulfill a craving. For REALLY good Banh Khot, visit Vung Tau in San Jose in NorCal. Now THAT place knows how to do Banh Khot like its nobody's business! Atmosphere: Authentic Vietnamese! Everything is about $5/plate, they sell some che and deli items to go for about a dollar each. Get in, get full, get out - efficiency at its best. Food: Apparently the best Banh Xeo in SoCal judging from what is featured on half the tables. However at the price they're asking, it's not a bad place to be and try a variety of items if you're not familiar with Vietnamese food or if you are indecisive the way I am. Overall: It'll be where I got for banh xeo until I find somewhere better or need a break from binh minh.

this place is more of a 3.5 but since i like this place i give it the 4.. i used to frequent this place when i was younger more then i do now, but the do have a good banh xeo. the vietnamese pancake as its called. the restaurant in itself has gone down since 10 years ago and seems to be quite dirrty. eww my elbows were sticky from putting them on the damn table. so dont do that and bring sanitizers cuz youll need it. this place gets busy during the weekends but the wait isnt normally that long although the food may take awhile to get. just depends. id say come try their banh xeo and their other stuff isnt bad either but be WARNED OF THE DIRTTINESS THAT THIS PLACE HAS. really gross. but thats their only downfall.

This is the only well-known place in the Vietnamese community for banh xeo. I don't frequent here regularly since my family makes it at home but my friend developed this hardcore addiction and every time she comes home from UCLA.. she demands banh xeo to satisfy her lack of Vietnamese food needs so I automatically become an accomplice to devour these crispy crepe-like pancakes. My only complaint is that they lack meat (shrimp and pork) to satisfy my carnivorous ways... the ratio of meat to bean sprouts is huge and as much as I love bean sprouts, it is literally an invasion of bean sprouts! But I can't complain much because of the price and I absolutely love the plethora of salad greens given to accompany my banh xeo. Other recommendations: bun rieu oc, banh khot, and the vast range of small vietnamese snacks they sell on the tables near the cashier.

Service is what you'd expect for a whole in the wall place but food came on time and I was starving so A++! We ordered duck noodle soup. It was very light in flavor but not a terrible start to our meal. Banh Xeo is just like everyone said. Light on the meat but delicious. Com tam bi cha suon nuong (broken rice, egg cake, shredded pork and pork chop) was ok. I'll probably stick with past recommendations and go for anything crispy fried here.

I've never had Banh Xeo before, but everyone said to come here. It's cheap and deliciously light and crispy... but I found it a little oily. If this is the best around and other places are worse, well, then I am forever spoiled!

This was my first time eating Banh Xeo, and I seriously don't know where else I would want to go for more. I love this stuff. The portions were great, the service was good but not great. But the food was bananas. It definitely got a little messy eating the Banh Xeo and wrapping it up with the fresh lettuce and herbs, but holy cow was it delicious. The taste of the food and size was definitely worth more than the 5 bucks or so. Inexpensive, filling, crazy delicious.

Across the street from the Brodard parking lot, this is my go to place for Banh Xeo, or savory Vietnamese crepes. These bright yellow beauties are filled with mung bean, beansprouts, pork, and shrimp, fried nice and crisp and are meant to be eaten wrapped up in lettuce and dipped in nuoc mam (chili fish sauce). At around $6 a pop, you are satisfied, even though it's a bit greasy. I forget what it's called, but the dish with shrimp fried in a lattice of sweet potato fries is pretty darn tasty too. I haven't tried anything else Not the best restaurant environment, so prisses beware.

Full Name: Nha Hang Van This place specializes in Banh Xeo, that crispy fried half moon shaped pancake/crepe stuffed with bean sprouts, pork and shrimp, that you cut a slice and stuff into a romaine lettuce leaf and add mint, basil, pickled and juliened carrots and white raddish, roll it up and dip into your Nuoc Mam fish sauce. Yummy! The Banh Xeo here are huge! They barely fit on the platter dish they are served on. And crispy (A Must!) and stuffed full of ingredients. They also have a smattering of Com Tam (broken rice) plates, Bun dishes, Bun Rieu and Pho soups. This place is pretty large, with a lot of tables, all filled with customers ordering Banh Xeo almost exclusively. On one side of the restaurant they have several tables with desserts and other dishes laid out that you can take home deli style. I had the Jin Doi deesert, a favorite of mine (that's the Chinese name, AKA Jin Der, I don't know the Vietnamese equivalent name, but deep fried sesame balls filled with sweet beans inside, best when the dough is still warm!) Their Bun Rieu is OK, but come here for the Banh Xeo! Most of the dishes are under $6, actually a lot are under $5. Cheap and good eats!

Banh Xeo and Banh Tom Co Ngu. Only thing you should eat here. Wait I take it back..they have tables filled with home made goodies (I usually get the Banana dessert (Che Chuoi) and the Xoi Cuc (Sticky Rice with mung bean and meat).- It's a $1 here and is filled with lots of meat filling..not stingy like other food-to-go place make where its all sticky rice and no filling. I do agree with Kat N. that the banh xeo is large but the shrimp/pork in the banh xeo isn't too plentiful but at around 5 bux.... I can't really complain. Is it me or is it getting really greasy lately? Either way, I don't know how they make it so crispy but I still like it! Becareful of the veggies, I've gotten sick from the "Cai Ngot" veggie sometimes. You'll know which one is the Cai Ngot..its kinda a long leaf that doesnt look familiar to you compared to the veggies you get when you eat pho. =D Banh Tom Co Ngu is bomb tho. Gotta get that! Make sure you share, it is lots of food~

if it weren't for the good food.. this place would be one or two stars. their staff is incredibly rude, the cleanliness is meh, and let's face it.. in the middle of lil saigon, it's the parking lot is always scary. but their food is good, as noted by other yelpers. nice big portions, fresh vegetables, their banh xeo is what they're famous for. their bun (skinny rice noodles) are decent, as is their chao long. not a fan, but they're fast and close to work.

This place is DA DANKEST OF THE DANK. I have gone here many times before, and the food has been consistent. However, today I went there for dinner and it was exceptionally AWESOME. I'm not really a fan of Viet restaurants since I'd rather eat at home, but man this place was good today. I ordered banh beo chen, com tam bi suong, and banh bot loc and OMFG it was good. Really good. The price is low, the water is filtered, the food is BOMB so they deserve a 5 stars from me.

Talk about YUMMY CHEAP eats!!! Now that the days of 50% off pho are gone, I had to go scour the local hole-in-the-walls for some good cheap eats, which ultimately led me here! Known for their banh xeo (savory Vietnamese crepes), a friend and I stopped by here for a new dinner adventure. We were drawn in when we saw a huge 50% off sign outside. We didn't care what the 50% off was for...the fact that it screamed "cheap dinner" was enough! My friend ordered the signature dish, banh xeo, I ordered a bo luc lac ("shaken" beef & rice dish), and we gave the 50% off springrolls a try as well. I have to say, I've had better springrolls but I have definitely had many WORSE springrolls *ahem Lee's ahem* They were still really yummers AND it was 50% off! The cheap price tag makes anything taste that much better. The banh xeo did not disappoint! Not too oily w/ the perfect crisp. The filling of shrimp, beef, and beansprouts were cooked to perfection. Now, I'd like to take a moment to rant about the beef dish bcs. it is definitely worth the extra wasted company time needed to fully articulate how much I LOVED this dish!!! The beef rice dish was AMAZING!!! For $6.25, you'd think they'd skimp on the beef but au contraire mon frere! It was a generous amount of melt in your mouth, tender, and perfectly seasoned beef! Most of the time, when I order this at other places, the amount of beef served couldn't even feed a tiny supermodel, let alone a not-so-tiny me! The texture can typically be super chewy *gag* A ravenous dog would find it difficult to fight through the meat. But not at Van's! Not to mention that it can sometimes be DOUBLE the price! *DOUBLE gag* To top off the awesomeness of this dish, they served it w/ a side of this carefully blended spicy soy sauce for the rice and beef that was to die for. I literally wanted to take a jug home and bathe in it. It was seriously THAT good! I would've paid just to have that sauce w/ rice alone! I'm awaiting my next visit there so I can take a test tube sample and see if I can duplicate it at home. I'd have NASA analyze it for me if I could. Soooooo DELICIOUS! *drools* As I mentioned, this place is a hole in the wall, hence the cheap prices but also, hence the yumminess! (at least from my experiences) It felt like eating at grandma's house. I was waiting for grandma to come out of the kitchen at and force feed me some more veggies. The service is pretty spectacular! *add a few more stars if possible* Imagine my surprise since Asian restaurants are synonymous w/ bad service. But here, it was a speedy and painless process. You can order in English or Vietnamese. The Hispanic person who took my order seemed to speak Vietnamese better than I do! Just don't tell my mom that =/ All 3 dishes, plus a soda chanh (lemon soda), soy milk, and 2 waters came out to be UNDER $20!!! I was simply blown away! Can it get any better??? I would venture to say this is THE "go-to" place for banh xeo AND bo luc lac. I know it's definitely my new go-to place!

first to say, I went here to this restaurant hearing it has the best banh xeo and that's what they were known for. Sat down with my family and ordered like 6 banh xeo and 5 orders of the half off nam nuong spring rolls. Customer service wasn't great as I expected knowing I was going into a asian restaurant. When I got my cup of water there was a stain on it and didn't even want to drink it anymore! Kinda grossed me out but I just let it slide and didn't drink it at all!! I wouldn't go eat here again knowing there is more options to eat at in bolsa!!

BEST place ever for banh xeo. It's crispy and full of flavor. I like both the regular banh xeo (shrimp + pork), and the veggie style one (tofu & mushroom). I wish they had less bean sprouts and more stuffing, but since it is a restaurant (and they need to make $), can't really expect that. Wish they had an option to pay a little more for more meat/shrimp stuffing and less beansprouts...then it'd be the perfect banh xeo. I drive from LA just to eat this when I'm craving it. Downside is sometimes it can be a bit greasy depending on the day. As for the other items on the menu, I've tried banh khot, which is similar tasting to banh xeo batter, but with a coconut milk taste to it. Very crunchy, bite-sized batter, with shrimp on top...a very yummy appetizer indeed. As for their fried yam with shrimp dish, it's only ok...i've had better elsewhere.

If this place had nicer decor I would give it 5 stars. This restaurant epitomizes what Bourdain calls the one dish restaurant/chef. If they are really famous for one thing, they must do it pretty well. That dish is Banh Xeo which sort of a crunchy savory crepe filled with shrimp, sliced pork belly, bean sprout and mung bean, eaten with nuoc cham sauce and masses of fresh vegetables and herbs. Very satisfying and so inexpensive. You go there, look around and at least half the tables have ordered that. The other half probably has Banh Tom which is sweet potatoe fries and shrimp, not the best version of that but beats any sweet potatoe fries at any "regular" restaurants (Max's in Fresno comes to mind). The Bun Rieu Oc is quite good. There is no description of that soup which would give it any justice. Let's just say there is escargot in it. Only in America do you get a Vietnamese hole in the wall restaurant where more that half the waiters are Mexican who speak Vietnamese. Just the other day one of them spoke it with a perfect Northern accent I thought the dude was Vietnamese. What gave it away was he was a little dark for a Northerner. And these guys work hard for not a lot of money. The dirty little secret is that most mainstream restaurants have first generation Latino chefs. Now they are waiters out front too and I get a big kick out of it. I salute those hombres!

*Food: Banh Xeo= supposedly the "BEST in Westminister"---it was decent, not great. very oily and not as crispy as it should be. * Service: not so much * Price: VERY goooood! $4.95 for the Banh Xeo w/ PLENTY of veggies!

Yet another strip mall (but not so hole in the wall this time) Vietnamese joint that specializes and is famous for certain items. Here is is the Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe/pancake) and Banh Tom (potato/sweet potato/prawn tempura). Ambiance and service are pretty good as your typical Vietnamese places go in the area.

Horrible service, but cheap delicious food. I tried the banh xeo, bahn beo and spring rolls. The spring rolls took forever to come out. Actually, they came out but kept on going to other tables. I had to go up to the cashier and he had no idea of the food orders so I had to ask someone else where our spring rolls were. Then they "just happened" to be ready for our table in another two minutes. So I would recommend to say something if your food doesn't make it to your table.

We were told that if you want Banh Xeo this is the place. Well their banh xeo is ok but their nuoc mam (fish sauce) to dip your Banh Xeo (crepe) is poor. I gave them a suggestion to use CoCo in their nuoc mam to make it better instead of plain tap water.

I'm a fan of Banh Xeo but not of this place because it was dirty. Other than that, I'll go for the Banh Xeo.

This place is known for its banh xeo (vietnamese sizzling crepes), but that's not why I come here. The hidden dish that is a gem here is the Bun Rieu (Tomato Crab Soup). It comes with snail and pigs blood AND I LOVE IT FOR THAT! It's definitely a true Vietnamese dish, and you get points in my book if you have had this dish and love it. It's one of those foods that I only see other Vietnamese people like. My honey does love it though so brownie points for him.

Summary based on 2 dinners: --better than average banh xeo, with lots of variety in the accompanying greens/herbs. Decent amount of pork and shrimp in the filling. --cheap --ok, friendly service --easy parking in adjoining lot --no free wifi --locally popular --cheap beer I'm vacillating between 3* and 4*, but will go for 4* I guess based on the sheer amount of food for the price. Better than An'z.

Great banh xeo, incredibly cheap, wish they would open a restaurant like this in Los Angeles

I have been craving for the Banh Xeo (Vietnamese non-desert crunchy crepe) it's so good! But everytime I stop by it's closed usually I stop by on Wednesday and I always forget too! :( So they have great Banh Xeo and great banh Khot (made with coconut & shrimp) you dip both in Fish sauce...it's pretty darn tasty. You gotta try if you haven't it's YUM YUM YUMMIE :)

I love Little Saigon because there are so many restaurants that specializes and are known for one dish. This place is known for their Vietnamese crepe or banh xeo. It's so big and fulfulling and cheap!! I also love this place because they give you so much lettuce. The waiters who are latinos understand when you order in Vietnamese! Don't try their goi cuon, nothing spectacular about them and don't be fooled by their 50% promotion. This place in my opinion is only good for banh xeo. This place didn't get a 5 star from me because it kinda makes me cringe being it a hole in the wall restaurant, but doesn't stop me from coming back.

There's only a few places where you can get Bun Xeo in the area, and in my opinion, this place has the best. Bun Xeo (a.k.a. sizzling crepe) is done so well here. It's nice and crispy on the outside with just the right amount of filling (bean sprouts, pork, shrimp, and some other items). Keep in mind, if you decide to come here, you sit yourself and they come to you. Don't expect wait service that is attentive to your every need. When you order, ask for everything you need because it could be difficult to flag a waiter down if you're lacking in things you need when your food has already been delivered.

I hope you all know, this place RECYCLES the lettuce you dont finish. I saw it first hand with my own eyes. You will notice that when they clear the tables, they dump all the plates into the tubs, but will carefully stack all the lettuce plates separately. Yes, the Banh Xeo is really good, but after I saw that, I almost yacked. COMPLETELY DISGUSTING. Charge me extra if you have to for fresh never touched by any other customer lettuce, I dont care, but to rewash lettuce and pass it off again Im sure is violating some type of health codes.

If you live in southern California and craving for Vietnamese crepes, I would suggest you to give Van's Restaurant a try. It does offer selections of authentic Vietnamese dishes and price is very reasonable. Will definitely visit this place again.

I have to be the first dissenter here, lo siento. I've long heard that Van's had the best banh xeo around. At first, I was excited to see this huge football-sized dish arrive but upon first bite, I had to immediately grab a bunch of napkins to wipe away the slick coat of oil on my lips. True, the banh xeo are super crispy, but that's about it. The filling for such a large crepe, was maybe two tablespoons of scattered ground pork and like, 2 shrimp with a lot of bean sprouts. I've also tried one or two other rice dishes here and found it to be rather unremarkable. For really great banh xeo -- the best I've found around LS, I'd recommend An'z Restaurant in Garden Grove.

Van's surely has the best Banh Xeo in Orange County. You wait forever for them to come out, but when they do, they definitely are tasty. The Nuoc Mam is also really good, not flavorless like other places. Although I hate to sit extremely close to strangers, as I am not shy by picking up the Banh Xeo with my bare hands and occasionally some finger licking. Come here for the food, not the service or ambiance. You will not be disappointed!

Best place for banh xeo. It is what this restaurant is known for. I've been going here for years and the prices have been increasing slowly, however, it is still considered cheap when you think about all the food you get. They also have this extremely yummy curry dish that they sell togo. It's 2 bucks! You will never find a cheaper dish. I usually eat banh xeo and then grab the curry dish togo. Run across the street to buy some bread that I eat with my curry dish. The only downside (thus, minus one star) is that this place can be dirty. I've had dirty cups and utensils a few times. Overall, this is one of the restaurants I frequent and will definitely come back! P.S. Parking in this plaza can be crazy, depending on the day. There's parking behind the building!

One star off since I didn't feel that the restaurant was clean to my standard. They're famous for their banh xeo (vietnamese crepe) and it's indeed really good. I had better in Vietnam but hey we're in America. Their chao long (chicken inner porridge) is good too.

  • Yralla L.

The best item here is the Vietnamese crepe called banh xeo. It is filled with pork, shrimp, daikon, and bean sprouts. Fresh lettuce, mint (other herbs), cilantro, cucumber, nuoc cham (sweet diluted fish sauce) are served on the side. The crepe is fried to a crisp and it is delicious. The banh khot, which are mini versions of the banh xeo, is good too. I only come here for the banh xeo usually. I just don't like the fact that they have raised their prices quite dramatically through the years with the banh xeo (It use to be under $5 for one). The banh xeo is worth a try here!

  • Mark David Y.

This place has one of the best Banh Xeo in OC. Banh Xeo only costs 5 bucks. Their banh xeo is not greasy, oily, but crispy rough. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for Banh Xeo.

  • Christina H.

5 dollar banh xeo! what more can you ask for? That is ridiculously cheap! And its tasty also. I havent tried anything else here so i have no other opinon about the other food on the menu and its a bit unsanitary here but if you want something cheap fast and good. This is your place!

  • Van M.

tooo greasy!!! so greasy i was gettin a lil queasy :( we also ordered the greasy cha gio, so coupled with the shiny banh xeo, my stomach was turning. very disappointed with this place. nem nuong is not rite either. there really should be no reason to order nem nuong rolls at a place that doesn't specialize in nem nuong bc it's hard to get that dish rite. we got it by accident bc it comes with the cha gio.

This place is a dirty ...somewhat hole in the wall joint. The service sucks, and the owner is an A-HOLE. But if you're not there for the service...the food is pretty good. My personal favorite from there is their banh xeo. I think this place makes one of the best nouc mam that truly compliments the full flavor of their dishes, such as banh xeo, banh knot and their banh cuon. The only thing I would advise not to try is their 50% off sale goi cuon...or spring rolls. It taste like sh$t!!! Put out the extra cash and go across the street to Brodard and get some really good spring rolls..it's worth every freaking penny.

I'd like to think I'm a connoisseur when it comes to these delicious crispy crepe like pancakes. I'm a huge fan of banh xeo (vietnamese crepe's filled with pork and shrimp) and I'd have to say that Van's Restaurant definitely serves up the best banh xeo in SoCal. When you see a restaurant that has a 200 limit capacity, jammed packed on a sunday afternoon, every table has one or more plates of banh xeo, waiting for 45 mins or more for a table does not constitute as being a popular place, then I don't know what is.. Just because they specialize in these delectable crepes, don't hold yourself back from trying other yummy dishes on their menu such as com bi suong (rice w/ pork chop) and shrimp w/ yam fries...

BANH XEO! so good must eat and the sweet potatoe shrimp fries are so great! and its dirt cheap and totally fun experience dinning in a traditional vietnamese restaurant setting. brings back NAM days lolz =)

I came here after being disappointed that i could not go to a different restaurant since that place was closed on a Tuesday. WOMP. Anywho, decided to come here instead with my friend and we sat down. The first thing we noticed is that this is definitely a very authentic Vietnamese restaurant. What we read from time to time on YELP was that this place was known for their crepes of some sort? However, we did not figure this out til LATER because we had no time to look over the menu and the waiter who approached us probably assumed we were Vietnamese, however we WEREN'T and he couldn't speak ANY ENGLISH whatsoever! This was so difficult!! Me and my friend were stumped, so we felt really pressured to just choose an item and so instead of telling them what we wanted we just pointed to what we wanted on the menu. Then to add to that, when our food came out I got a completely different thing from what I ordered!! I was disappointed, but I knew there was no going back, there was no way I could tell them this wasn't what I ordered because they wouldn't even understand me. HMPH. So, decided to just eat what I got which was some vermicelli noodle bowl with soup, it was different, it wasn't bad but just not what I was expecting. My friend got a Pho bowl and she said it tasted different too, but not bad, just different. The cashier handler was rude and just took our money and didn't even ask us anything he just typed in our amount on the cash register and expected us to pay. Probably would not come back here again. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall spot.

Two words: Banh Xeo It's pronounced BANH-SAY-OH and it's delicious. It's a crepe, made with mung bean or lentils, folded over vegetables (i.e. bean sprouts, carrots, etc.) and also includes shrimp and pork. The crispy exterior of the crepe is indescribable and by the time you bite into the vegetables and stop at the meat- there is a flavor explosion occurring inside your mouth. Take it over the top by dunking the crepe inside the sauce that it is served with...it's over! Hands down one of my favorite summertime eats. It is a refreshing treat- perfect for hot summer weather.

pssssst....come here...yeh, you useful, funny, cool yelper... let me tell you a little secret.....dont' tell others... go to van's restaurant and order the banh xeo and banh khot and the sweet potato shrimp.... i know you can barely pronounce it...don't worry. Just write it down on your palms. Ok, you got it? Now drive over there RIGHT NOW before the your sweaty palms fades the ink... and bust out your palm to that confused waiter... Welcome to "biiiieeeetnam" bishes....enjoy! it's like that kinda gem. ok, now wash your hands from that stanky fish sauce...and hush hush about this one!

this is like vietnamese food you have to go eat with a vietnamese person. it ain't your local spring roll-vietnamese sandwich-pho place. now i understand why folks always want to go to korean restaurants with me. i don't know the name of ANYTHING i ate!!! we got: -sweet potato fries with deep fried shrimp. it came out looking like a net with shrimp caught in it....cuz the shrimp was like, caught in the fries. -these...little coconut-y tart-looking things with shrimp. -these mung bean cakes with...I don't even know. and enough fish sauce to bathe yourself in. yum! good food doesn't need translation.

Come here for the banh xeo and the thit kho trung. The latter is not normally found at Viet restaurants and this place not only offers it but does it well. The restaurant came highly recommended by a local and my parents (native Vietnamese) were bowled over by both dishes. They have high standards! They loved it to the point where despite wanting to try so many restaurants, they wanted to go here more than once. Good enough for me!

Banh xeo is not bad. Even though the batter has no taste, very less meat, 3-4 shrimps but the veggies are fresh. Thanks to the veggies otherwise it will be 2 stars.

I'll make this short and sweet. Get the Banh Xeo, it's pretty bomb. I was getting my nails done once and the sweet vietnamese grandmother working at the nail salon told me that this is the place she goes to if she wants good banh xeo. It's vietnamese grandma approved, it has to be good right? My friends and I shared one order of the banh xeo and i got a broken rice plate for my entree. Not the fanciest of places, but definitely good price and portions. I will come back :)

I think I come here every weekend because the food is so good and so cheap! Ambience: --There's so many tables in the restaurant, and it's always full and packed. No matter what time of day you go, you'll probably have to wait for a table. --They sell to-go food on the right side of the restaurant, which is a great thing to pick up before you leave. Food: --Bun Cha Ha Noi: They give you so much meat. I love the pickled veggies that come on top of the meats. The side of noodles is sufficient to feed one, maybe two people. It comes with a large plate of greens as well. I love the marinated meats in the dish - it's comparable to Binh Minh across the street but it's $2-$3 cheaper. --Banh Tom: sweet potatoes fried with shrimp. It's a great snack to pair with any meal. Again, it's like what you can get at Binh Minh across the street, but way cheaper. It's not even oily so it's more enjoyable. --Bun Bo Hue: Comes in a large bowl that'll definitely fill you up. I put the whole side of sate chili sauce in the bowl and it was just the right amount of spice. --Banh Beo: I love these little dishes!! Also, I love that when the plates come out, they're all hot, which means they were freshly made. It's enough for 2-3 people to share and makes a great appetizer. --Banh Xeo: Probably the crispiest Banh Xeo i've ever had. Like all their other dishes, you can tell it's freshly made and hasn't been sitting there since it's so crispy. Inside, there's bean sprouts, shrimp, and pork. Food To-Go area: --They have a list of prices and pictures of everything they sell in the area so you can decide whether or not you want to buy it. --Chicken Curry: I love this curry!! It's sweet and has a slight coconut flavor to it. It's perfect for dinner or lunch, and can feed 2-3 people, or can feed you for two meals. There's sweet potatoes and regular potatoes inside, along with large pieces of chicken. --Gio $1.35: I love buying these chunks of Gio, cut it up, and leave it in the fridge to eat with bread. One chunk can feed me for a week or even longer. --Banana Che: Instead of going to the Che stores, you can just pick up your dessert here!

If you want cheap and good banh xeo, this is the place to go. The food came out quickly and they have a good variety of Vietnamese food. Waiters are Mexican and speak fluent Vietnamese. Floor and tables were dirty and they have xmas decorations in the middle of summer. Looks weird, but they focus more about the food. 4 star for ONLY the banh xeo!

Tried the Banh Xeo and egg rolls here. This is a good spot for value priced vietnamese. The food is nothing spectacular but it's still good and will fill you up... for a while at least. FOOD Banh Xeo - This looks huge. In reality, the outside is very thin and the filling is mostly veggies with a little bit of shrimp/pork mixed in. Egg Rolls - Served to you crispy and hot. These are pretty much your average vietnamese egg rolls. SERVICE They are pretty good here. We don't have to wait too long and when we ordered stuff like drinks, they didn't forget about us. PARKING Large, shared parking lot. Not a problem for us during lunch hours on a weekday, but I can see this getting full.

This place is a family style restaurant where food and menu is simple. The people who work here don't speak much English (only Vietnamese and Spanish) but they are very friendly when not slammed busy. Place is decent clean, just that they cannot handle with limited staff. I had many dishes here before but today I had the Banh Xeo, Vietnamese crispy crepe with pork, shrimp, mung beans, and bean sprouts inside the pancake crepe. The batter that is fried is the biggest highlight, thick, crispy, sweet, and slight oil just right. This dish is served with the nuoc mop sweet fish sauce topped with picked carrots and white radish/turnip. If want it spicy, add the sauces and hot chili provided. Also try their Bahn tom, Cha Gio, bun Cha Hanoi, Banh canh, and com Bo luc lac which are very good and well priced. Sorry I don't want to bore you with other food details. This place is known for good price, fresh ingredients, and help yourself and eat.

Not the cleanest restaurant but the dining room is huge and service is quick. The servers are Mexican who've worked here long enough to understand and speak Vietnamese. The banh xeo is huge, tasty, crispy and best of all... less than 6 bucks! If you're looking to get your banh xeo fix on this is the go to spot besides your moms.

After a long trip to San Diego we decide to come grab some Vietnamese food for brunch. My party all decide on Banh Xeo so Van's restaurant was the answer! I haven't been here for several year and when I walked in it looks exactly the same! What is Banh Xeo you ask? Banh xeo aka Vietnamese taco means "sizzling cake", which is named for the loud sizzling sound it makes when the batter is poured into the hot pan.The prices are not bad it is $5.95 for most of their items including the banh xeo. The service- The waiter only comes to take your order and deliver your food that's all the interaction you will get at this place. When your done eating you go up to the cash register and pay there. The food- Banh Xeo- It comes with a side of veggies and nuoc mam (fish sauce). In side the banh xeo it has bean sprouts, pork belly meat, shrimp, and mung beans. I love that this banh xeo was super crispy but there wasn't alot of meat in it. That is disappointing because they use to pack it with a lot of meat and shrimp! Banh beo- This is a steam ricecake topped with dried shrimp. Served with a side of nuoc mam This dish was lacking flavor I couldn't taste any thing besides the oil and fish sauce. Banh Tom Co Ngu (fried yam with shrimp) This dish is a great appetizer you should get! They give you some veggies to wrap the banh tom co ngu on and dip it with the nuoc mam. The shrimps are big and there were a lot in our dish. This place overall is a okay place to try. I would come here again but wish they would put more meat and shrimp in the banh xeo!

Time for a review update... my previous one is definitely not useful enough. In the past few years the prices have increased a bit, but this place is still cheap eats :) I came by recently with Herbert S cause I was craving Banh Xeo and I was too lazy to make it myself. He ordered the Bun Rieu ($5.50) and I accidentally ordered 2 orders of Banh Xeo ($5.95) thinking he can handle both. Oops? Good thing it's cheap! I also ordered Rau Ma ($2.00) or Pennywort Juice. Both dishes came with an abundance of veggies. These were not the freshest veggies, but it was nice to have a wide variety to pick and choose from. Herbert S liked the Bun Rieu. I still think the Banh Xeo is a good deal, but the quality seems to be worse than what I recall. I always thought that there was wayyyy to much beansprouts, but now I feel like they are skimping out on the pork and the shrimp too. The batter used to taste a lot better though. Even though it is still crispy, there is something less satisfying about this Banh Xeo batter. And the fish sauce it came with was quite basic. Overall it is nothing worth raving about, but still cheaper and quicker than making it myself. The Rau Ma had too too much sugar in it... My efforts in choosing an antioxidant beverage to be healthy had opposite effects. I think this place is a great spot to eat some authentic and less mainstream Vietnamese dishes for cheap when I'm too lazy to make it myself... But if I were to have made the Banh Xeo myself, it would have definitely tasted better than this one.

My friends and I came here for dinner and the place was fairly filled up but there were still some open spots. The restaurant itself is pretty big though so there was quite a bit of room. My friends and I ordered the Banh Xeo (which is like a Vietnamese Crepe) and the Banh Thap Cam (which was a combination of a variety of small bites that they had). The Banh Xeo was delicious, it was very crispy on the outside but had a nice texture on the inside from the fillings. They also serve it with a variety of veggies, and not just the lettuce but also some of the more unusual ones. The Banh Thap Cam came with a variety of dishes including a mochi looking one, a cured pork one, a clear sticky rice one, one with mung bean on top, and some of the Banh Khot. Of the bunch, I liked the Banh Khot best, and I will probably just order that next time rather than getting a variety. Overall a great place with excellent Banh Xeo and Banh Khot. I believe this place is cash only, so prepare for that.

6 hours at the salon with no breakfast - yeah, I was hungry...more like hangry. I needed food desperately. It seems to be that we are always in Little Saigon on the weekends so since I couldn't wait until we got back for movie night, we decided to eat here. Van's is tiny and unassuming. Take a seat at a table, grab a menu and someone will be right with you. If you want good service, you really need to come to Little Saigon. They want you in and out. We both got Banh xeo with thai iced tea. The banh xeo is huge and filled with mung beans, rice, shrimp and pork but it's amazing. Basically think of it as a crepe. You tear off a piece, wrap it around a lettuce leaf with some herbs, dip it into the sauce and enjoy! Sooo good and so cheap. My meal was about $7.

Note: Review is based on my eating experience two years ago. Location/Parking: Located in a small strip mall. Parking is a bit tough, but be patient. Wait Time: Depends on when you go here. Went here twice for lunch and both times I had to wait about 10-15 minutes. Service: Service can be a hit or miss, but that is expected for any asian restaurant. Pretty cool to see hispanic people lending a hand with bussing table/waiter duties and they speak decent vietnamese. Food: I only had two food items. They are: 1) Banh Xeo (vietnamese crepe): Mmmmmmmmmmmmm..... *crunching noises* Sorry for eating so loud! They are soo darn crunchy, delicious, and a hot mess! Basically a crepe with sprouts, pork, shrimp, and sprouts. The appetizer also comes with a separate plate of basil leaves, lettuce, and some other stuff vegetables. Tip: Break off a piece of lettuce, cut a piece of the banh xeo and roll it with the lettuce, dunk it in Nuoc Mam, and then finish with a loud crunch! *CRUNCH* 2) Sweet potato fries with shrimp: Gosh, only I can say about this is AMAZING! I love sweetpotato fries and sweetpotato fries loves me back! I wish they had some spicy cha sauce from Cha Cafe in El Monte! You can improvise by using the vietnamese staple sauce..... 'Nuoc Mam' to save you! I wouldn't necessarily drive here for banh xeo due to the proximity of my house to this place, but if i'm in the area I wouldn't mind getting some.

If you are looking to eat banh xeo but on a budget, this place is your GO-TO place. Recommendations: -soda Chanh, thai tea, cafe su da all for $2 or less I believe! -banh xeo!! "Vietnamese taco" $6 The Hispanics server knows vietnamese, that is awesome! I HIGHLY a recommend brodards (across the street) if you want to eat BANH XEO. It's absolutely amazing, however it costs more! You'll never have banh xeo like brodards. :)

Omg! How is this place still in business?! The department of health services need to inspect the restaurant. It is filthy and disgusting. I actually left during the middle of my meal because the place is extremely dirty. I couldn't finish the meal. The waiter sneezed into his hands and continue to work without washing afterward. Too many unclean tables, sticky floor, and the kitchen is a mess. The food is very bland and gross!

  • Vince L.

Located in a strip mall, the storefront is very unassuming. This restaurant has been here years and I find it to be pretty consistent. Banh xeo is a dish that is really tough to get if you want it to be good. Vietnamese restaurants who offer a huge variety of dishes don't usually get the crispiness or the filling proportion correct. You really have to go to a place that serves this as a primary dish. It's hard to make at home as well, because the amount of oil you'll need to use to fry the pancake will scare you. Long story short, the banh xeo here has excellent texture in that it has a perfectly crispy shell. The amount of bean sprouts, mung beans, pork belly and shrimp is perfect. If you've ever had interest in trying this dish, Van's is the place to do it.

Let me just start by saying banh xeo is my favorite food in the world. Ok at least top 5, because who can chose just one thing right? It's a Vietnamese style savory crepe made with turmeric that makes it yellow and coconut milk that makes it kinda rich. I feel like I've personally perfected it at home, but this is one of my fave spots to go to when out and about. GIANT crispy banh xeo that has a decent amount of meat (there isn't supposed to be alllll that much in there anyways ya'll) and yes, too much bean sprout but i usually ask them to put less or trash what I don't eat. I looove their banh khot, it's very similar to the banh xeo batter but it's cooked in a little cast iron mold into these little bite sized cups of amazing. Their nuoc mam (fish sauce) is on point and they always give a good amount of veggies-totally sets it off. Service is always fast and friendly. It's cute how the Hispanic workers have grown so accustomed to working there that they've picked up Vietnamese and can communicate the menu items with you and whatnot. I have to agree with the other reviews that it's not the cleanest establishment but not in such a way that anyone would get sick. Not that I've witnessed at least but that does knock it down a star.. It's awesome how they also have the tables where the sell homemade Vietnamese snacks/grab and go foods. Anyways, come by for some legit viet food!

Heck ya I want some Banh Xeo! SOOOO freakin good and its one of the best places around to get my legit banh xeo on. Roll up your sleeves because this is going to be messy. Share one you ask? HELL NAH foo. Though these things are definitely share size I like to have it all to myself so I can eat like the fat pig that I am. haha. If you expect normal restaurant service you're going to have a bad time. Its a vietnamese restaurant and no one got time for that. The mexican servers also put me to shame, they speak better vietnamese than me!

Craving for Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Crepe) Man this place does it right for banh xeo. One order can feed two people, that is how big it is. It comes with lots of veggies. I only had it once from here, and every table had an order of this. It was crispy and had a decent amount of meat inside. I remember it was somewhere in the $5-$6 price range for an order of banh xeo. I finally found a place in OC that does banh xeo right.

4 Stars for the Banh Xeo alone. This thing is so big you can share it with another person. Super crispy and bursting with meat and bean sprout filling! Definitely a must have if you come here. But then again, you should only come here for the Banh Xeo. 1 star for the Goi Cuon and the Banh Beo. Seriously, it was nasty. The Banh Beo was soft, runny and jello like. It was gross. The Goi Cuon was loosely wrapped and fell apart once you bit into it. The sauce it came with was horrible. Restaurant is a bit dirty and service not so great but what can you expect! lol So... I suggest only ordering the Banh Xeo here if you are particularly craving it!

$5.50 for a crispy, adequately stuffed banh xeo- can't beat that. Banh xeo is their signature dish here, every table will have at least one of these popular Vietnamese crepes. You can eat it straight up, make lettuce wraps or what I prefer... filling up a bowl with a bunch of greens and taking a portion of the banh xeo and placing it atop; kind of making a salad. Don't forget to add the fish sauce on top (not of course before adding some additional chili paste). I've made this dish at home and it's so much easier to go here and get it done without all of the hassle. I was disappointed because the night I went, there was no other apps as listed on the menu available. This led us to the egg rolls which is something I can get anywhere else, bummer. I tried their soda chanh (lemon soda) and it was alright, I usually like it when there is an actual lemon in the drink. The place doesn't feel exactly the cleanest (what do you expect) and the outside decor with the black gates alongside the glass doesn't provide that comfort you'd like while eating out. They also have a stand nearby where they sell specialty items (right now, a lot of this is focused toward the coming lunar new year). Bring cash because that's all they accept here.

3 Stars for the food. 1 star for the service & the restaurant. They have the same decorations & curtains they've had 20 years ago.. I'm not exaagerating. It's true, that awful burgundy curtains has been there since 1995. Bánh xeo was pretty good.

So I love banh xeo. So a friend and I decided to give this place a try since its "known" for the banh xeo. It isn't the worst I've tried but certainly not the best. So we walked into the restaurant, no greeting, no direction to where to sit. So I chose an empty table near the front that already had a menu it. We decided on getting the banh xeo, banh khot, soda xi mui, and iced soy milk. The Latino man took our order that I placed in Vietnamese with ease #impressed The banh xeo itself lacked flavor and the vegetables served on the side seems picked through. One thing I did like was the fact that it wasn't super oily. As for the banh khot. I'm pretty sure this isn't how they make it in Vietnam. They way I've had it was the cake/batter itself is made from blended soaked rice and topped with a quail egg. This one literally tasted like the used the banh xeo batter. I order a soda xi mui. This drink was completely wrong. It was not tart at all. It was just overly sweet. There was about an inch of sugar on the bottom of the glass. When asked to remake the drink, he gave me a Togo cup and asked to pour it into there so there will be less sugar. So stupid and gross. Needless to say, will not be coming back. If I crave banh xeo in the future,I'll just go to Hoa binh down the street.

This establishment isn't the cleanest spot in town but the food is cheap and good. They're known for their Banh Beo which is a steamed rice cake in small dishes with toppings such as green onions, dried shrimp and Banh Xeo which is like a Vietnamese crepe. Oh and don't except great customer service from a place like this. You'll need to learn the "Asian wave".

好好吃。有便宜。物超所值。Thus restaurant is the best restaurant for families. It's so well known after several decades so I even met a family of 8 from Australia. "Who recommended this restaurant to you?" I asked that tall Asian lady who looked like the CFO of that family who paid the bill. "A taxi driver", she said. Now you know why it's cheap and good, what Asians want, use money like you are using sharp knife edges. Meaning, you maximize the purpose of Benjamins. Another customer who came here to eat after 3pm agreed with me that we planned to keep this restaurant a hidden jewel among us without referring others so we may enjoy the quietness to think and enjoy without noise from 20 tables. Oh well, the owner has been very friendly and offered quick service to me since my friend Maia papaya brought me here, so I decided to return the owner a favor by sharing this valuable information with you. Tip well and speak English well or Spanish with servers.

I would give this place zero stars if I could. The restaurant is a bit dingy and dirty which I generally disregard if the food is good. There were 3 overworked guys who ran around like crazy trying to cover all the tables. The 0 stars are for the horrible food only. The shrimp/yam fries came out hard and cold and tasted stale. I'm pretty sure they were fried in old oil a long time ago and then reheated, maybe more than once. The banh xeo was crispy but also very greasy and the meat inside was gamey. The egg rolls came out warm and crispy but again the meat inside was gamey. The banh beo was a lump of tasteless dough that I could barely swallow. They give you ONE type of sauce for all dishes which is a crime of laziness when it comes to Vietnamese food. My sis recommended this place and she is usually spot on, so I don't know if I came in a bad day. I have no plans to go back and give it another shot though when there are a million other restaurants nearby. Yes, it's pretty cheap but I'd rather pay the extra $2 for food that is edible. We left and went to Thanh Restaurant down the street, which is always consistently yummy and cheap. There is nothing worse than leaving a restaurant disappointed and hungry.

Banh xeo is what many come for. The crust is ok and there are plenty of meat and shrimp in the crepe but it's nothing that I would go out of my way for. The restaurant is kindda dirty and the tables are sticky. Service isn't that great either. The waitress was no where to be found and after 2 other parties came after me, she appeared and took their orders before ours. No a big deal. When we were done, she wasnt around either. It wasnt busy but it seems disorganized. They were selling Banh tet when I was there and that seemed to be a distraction from the restaurant business aswell. Definitely won't be back. There are a few pics of Jesus and religious symbols throughout the restaurants aswell.

My family and I have been going here since I was young and this place has always tasted great! It's most known for its banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe) but there are many other delicious items on the menu as well. The place may not be the cleanest, the quietest, or most hyped, but it gets the job done for me. Usually I get the banh xeo with meat or sometimes I get the sweet potato yams! Note: This place probably won't be the healthiest option, but veggies are served with most meals.

Cheap food. You get what y o u get for service with the ambiance and price. Surprised to have a Hispanic taking your order at a vietnamese restaurant. People come here for banh xeo, which is sometimes refer as a vietnamese Taco. I think is more like a crispy savory crepe. Not the best but it will do when your momma don't cook it for you.

  • Cam C.

Cheapest, quickest, and dirtiest meal you can eat for $5.50 since both the Banh Xeo and plate of fried shrimp/sweet potato cost that much. Coolest part is someone from a Latin background comes and speaks to you in Vietnamese to take your order and bring your food. The owners are too busy raking in the dough in the back so it's fun to communicate with the workers in Vietnamese, English, and Spanish.

This review is for their steamed mini banh tets. This place has been selling mini banh tet for as long as I can remember getting them here. Yellow mung beans rolled in sticky rice and steamed in banana leaf- that's the classic banh tet. The last time I came here was about 2 years ago, and banh tet was $1.00. Now the price has increased to $1.35, kinda pricy for a small roll, nut that's what I was cravin' so I'm buying it!! All the small banh tet is $1.35 and there are 3 kinds : banana, salted mung bean, and sweetened mung bean. They were all very good, soft, and moist. The banh Chung is $2.50 and banh gio is $1.35.

The service here is good and their most popular dish here is the Banh Xeo!! It's perfectly crispy and they are generous with the greens on the side. The Banh Beo is pretty big here and I love that it comes with a lot of toppings!

Crowded place. Specialty is the Vietnamese crepe or banh xeo. It's that good. If you come here, rate the banh xeo. They have other stuff as well, but don't you go to one place for that place specialty? That way you can filter the others reviews, some don't make sense. Crispy, generous portion. Tons of Veggies. Popular place. Affordable. When my sister last visited, she came her 5 days straight. And I saw the MC/presentator from the Paris by night show. Wasn't too sure it was him so I asked someone to confirm, and seems like when he flies from Canada, that is one of his stop to get the crepe.

Still amazing! I really enjoy getting the Banh Xeo here. Never had it anywhere else so I'm unable to compare to anyone else's, sadly. Place was crowded when we went last Sun. I guess it's to be expected because it was Father's Day. We got one of the last tables but still received prompt service. For an appetizer we got Banh Beo, which were tasty little cups topped with shrimp and green onion. I'm going to take a guess that the base, is rice based cake. Not 100 percent sure, so if I'm wrong I apologize. It was a nice a savory start to our yummy Banh Xeo meal. The Xeo is nice and crisp, filled with bean sprouts, pork, and shrimp. The server also supplies you with a mountain of greens to eat your crepe with. Also can't forget to dip it in some Fish Sauce. Price is still good, it's $5.50 compared to it being $5 last year. Inflation I get it and I accept it. If you haven't had the pleasure to try this dish, I insist that you make your way to Van's

They have the best banh xeo! The good is excellent. The restaurant itself is crowded. Big parties are welcome. Service is ok but slow.

Every time I'm in the area or my parents come down to SoCal to visit, we always stop by here. The Banh Xeo is really crispy and there's a lot of filling too! ;) The price for them is reasonable, about 5.95 per a Banh Xeo when it's typically 9 or 10. The waiters who are Latino also speak Vietnamese so that's a plus! Main issue is parking though.

Stopped by here with my cousins on our way to Irvine for some banh xeo. Food: We each got a banh xeo and then shared some shrimp and sweet potato fritters. The banh xeos are huge! they barely fit on the plate they are placed on. Come's out freshly made so its hot and crunchy. Each person gets a plate of vegetables to wrap your banh xeo to dip into delicious fish sauce. The sweet potato shrimp fritters are decent, lacks a little flavor but thats what the fish sauce is for. They are known for their banh xeo and rightfully so since they are so delicious and fairly cheap as well for the size of it. Service: Let's start by saying that this is not one of the cleanest restaurants out there. They shove as many tables and chairs in as possible so its tight. You can end up sitting next to no one or a family of 5 with little kids being loud and obnoxious. They also pretty much just get a wet towel and wipe everything to the floor as cleaning the table so the ground can be sticky and/or covered in vegetables. Food comes out quick though. Location: Inside a decent sized strip plaza. Somewhat small parking lot considering the amount of stores. Can get crowded during dinner times and weekends.

when we first came to this restuarant i had to laugh at the name...a restuarant names "restuarant" in vietnamese (i didnt see the van's part). Anyway, the food here is super yummy hometown vietnamese cooking. the best part is that they have EVERYTHING! the banh xeo is better than any place i've had it at (an they're huge) and the bun rieu is awesome! I havent ordered something there that i didnt like. If you craving for so good old vietnamese food without foo-fooness this is the place for you! This is another one of my staple must-go restuarants in LA

Wow this place is CHEAaaap. $4.75 for banh xeo with lots of veggies. It's huge! The banh xeo was really good. Crispy on the outside with warm bean sprouts, shrimp and pork in the inside. I also ordered the banh tom (yam fries with shrimp). It was eh.. A little too much batter for me although the price is cheap! I left satisfied but when I got home I had some stomach issues due to MSG I'm guessing. Blah it taste good. The restaurant was a bit dirty and all so maybe next time I'll buy it togo.

The Best Banh Xeo in Southern California!!! The literal meaning of Banh Xeo means Sizzing cake which happens as the watery batter hit the hot oil in the wok. It is a Vietnamese pancakes made with rice flour, turmeric powder, coconut juice with pork, shrimp, beansprout and mung beans as fillings. The Banh Xeo is brought out to your table accompanied by a large plate of lettuce, mustard leaves, mint, basil and various other herbs and a bowl of Nuoc Mam. You would take a mustard leaf, put a piece of the Banh Xeo on it with various herbs then dip into the Nuoc Mam. It is pure Vietnamese food nirvana. I would be willing to drive the 1.5 hours to Garden Grove to enjoy this dish a few times a year. This the dish that this restaurant is known for but you can also try various other authentic dishes. The prices are inexpensive and you can literally order almost all the menu and not break the bank. Bring lots of friends so that you can try more dishes. I was there with 5 people and our check came to $30.00 plus tips. They have various Vietnamese meat and sweet food wrapped in banana leaves that you can buy and take home to consume during the week. I bought several pork rolls and a few Banh Gio.

The Banh Xeo is amazing. I was brought into Van's by a Vietnamese coworker. He said I should try the Banh Xeo. I'm now a convert. I went back several times with him. I took another coworker who is Chinese, and he loved it almost more than me. I took a third, "stick in the mud" (American) coworker and turned up his nose, insulted the owner, and left. He had "issues about pork," which is in the Banh Xeo. His problem... definitely not theirs. Anyway, I think this would be the most amazingly fun "hands on-feed your date" experience, for anybody who is interested, too. I will warn you though... I have only liked the Banh Xeo and the Banh Tom. And it's VERY messy, so wash your hands before it comes out, and be prepared to wash up again after you eat. But you will love it! Oh, and if you are looking for "other Vietnamese specialty treats" like those rice buddles, some desserts, and other, they usually have made them special, for sale, during Vietnamese holidays.

When Brodard is packed, come across the street to this huge restaurant that always has a table and no wait. Banh xeo is the specialty. $4.50 for a huge plate. (the closest thing I have found in the SF bay area is 1/2 the size and double the price and not quite there with the recipe). The iced coffee here is superb -- French Roasted super strong and they don't add too much condensed milk. Delicious!

My go-to place for banh xeo. We like to get it to go. I didn't even know they had banh khot here. Sometimes I try to order something other than banh xeo, but when every table in the restaurant has a plate of banh xeo on it, it's kind of hard not to give in. Huge yummy banh xeo + small price = happy me!

my first time having Banh Xeo and now I have a new favorite Vietnamese dish as well as a new favorite Vietnamese restaurant. =) a crispy crepe filled with bean sprouts, pork slices, and shrimp accompanied by a whole plate of fresh basil and other greens to be dipped in a light fish sauce...mmmm...this is definitely good eats. at first I was confused as to how to dig into this massive crepe, then the pleasing aromas over took my concern for manners and i just started to tear it apart with my hands. sometimes messy dripping delicious food just tastes so much better eaten with bare hands. my friend and i also happened to look around and see this other dish of little tarts with shrimp in them and we couldn't resist. once again, as soon as the plate hit our table..we dove in with our hands and the tasteful savory tart dipped in fish sauce did not disappoint. the other little delicacies on the plate, however were not as pleasing. especially a flat mini rice cake with some ground green bean powder on top, the texture was grainy in an unpleasant way and the mixture of salty with a hint of sweetness from the green bean didn't meld together well. Banh Xeo, you are my new favorite food discovery =) Tips: I'm pretty sure this place is cash only, but the prices really can't be beat. The restaurant is quite spacious and the bathroom is decent for Asian restaurant standards.

I don't know why people rave about the "special house banh xeo" at this restaurant. I would think they do a better job being in a vietnamese community. I've lived in Saigon for 4 years and this is as far from authentic as you can get. For those who are from vietnam will understand my criticism after I explain how they make their banh xeo. First, the crepe is not supposed to be thick and crispy like a taco shell. What they are doing is taking a short-cut by pan-frying the batter until crispy, first, then add in the filling which was prepared ahead of time and folding the crispy crepe-of-a-shell over the filling like a taco. This method of preparation makes the crap-shell thick and saturated with oil, making an otherwise healthy lite dish heavy and oily. They used lean pork and not the belly cut, in addition, the shrimps were small, the mung bean paste was absent and very stingy with the vegetables. One last thing, the steps of preparation is also out of sequence which negates the essential essence of this dish. Vietnam House in Alhambra does a much better job.

Dont order anything else in this restuarant except for the their Banh Xeo aka a Vietnamese crepe. The crepe comes with bean sprouts, shrimp and pork inside of them. It will come with a plate of veggies so that you could pair the crepe with the Nuoc Mam aka Fish Sauce. Once you try theirs no other crepe will be the same the reason being is how can get their crepe to be so nice and crispy? Its all in the secret batter and pan they use. Not the cleanest restaurant. The decor is a bit old fashion. Parking is easy since its in a plaza. They take cash only so come prepared. Also, the waitor who was Mexican was speaking VIETNAMESE!!!

Went here last night to satisfy my cravings for banh xeo (vietnamese crepe) and banh khot (vietnamese mini crepe with jumpo shrimp). The banh xeo was extremely crispy as well as the banh khot.... Take a date here... if the oil from the banh xeo that makes your lips so glossy and kissable doesn't turn your date on... the nuoc mam (fish sauce) will surely make him/her want to ravish your body right there on the dinner table... oh yea baby... fish sauce! Between my buddy and I, we ordered 2 plates of banh khot, two plates of banh xeo and a plate of sweet potato fries and shrimp. The vegetables are extremely fresh, but then again you're talking about good old "ga-den go."
